The famous "Anorak City" flexi was a scratchy scene anthem celebrating the siren allure of indie-trainspotterdom. "You Should All Be Murdered" was indie pop's somewhat Smiths-esque answer to Harry Secombe's "If I Ruled The World". And then came perhaps the most "Sarah in a nutshell" single of them all, a heady collision of obsessive-romanticism, gorgeous twelve-string shimmer and just the right redemptive twinkle of knowing irony: "I'm In Love With A Girl Who Doesn't Know I Exist". "So I'll just lie and dream of the chances I've missed..."
All these singles are collected onto the London Weekend compilation. Harvey later went on to record several albums under his own name.
Can't You Tell It's True
Another Sunny Day Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Thought about the things I said
Maybe I just got confused but
Now I wish that I were dead
It's no fun being out of love
I just cry a lot
What else can I do?
'cause I need you girl
Can't you tell it's true?
I couldn't help but overreact
Now I just try to pretend
You're not that important to me
I just want you as a friend
But I now know
I want something more
But you can't understand
'cause you never do
But I need you girl
Can't you tell it's true?
Can't you tell it's true?
Can't you tell it's true?

Can't you tell it's true?
In Another Sunny Day's song Can't You Tell It's True, the singer takes a walk along the beach and reflects on their current state of mind. They realize that they may have said things that they didn't mean to someone they loved and now regret it so much to the extent that they wish they were dead. They are out of love with this person and they constantly cry about it, unable to find any other way to cope with the pain.
The singer admits to overreacting and pretending that this person isn't important to them, merely a friend. But deep down, they know that they want something more from this person, something that they can't quite comprehend or understand. The repetition of "Can't you tell it's true?" suggests that they want this person to see how much they need and want them, but their feelings may not be reciprocated.
Overall, the song is a melancholic portrayal of unrequited love and the struggle to cope with heartbreak. The singer's emotions are raw and painfully honest, making it easy for listeners to relate to their experiences.
