Early life
Elgort was born in Manhattan. His parents are Arthur Elgort, a fashion photographer who has worked extensively for Vogue for over thirty years, and Grethe Barrett Holby, an opera director. His father is of Russian Jewish descent, and his mother is of English, German, and Norwegian ancestry. His maternal grandmother, Aase-Grethe, was in the Norwegian resistance during World War II, and saved Norwegian Jewish children by moving them into neutral Sweden; because of these activities, she was imprisoned in a concentration camp.
Elgort has two older siblings, Warren, a film editor, and Sophie, a photographer. At the age of nine, his mother took him to try out for School of American Ballet. He attended The Professional Performing Arts School, Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School and Stagedoor Manor summer camp. While at LaGuardia, Elgort performed in a rendition of Hairspray with Kyle Jean-Baptiste. Elgort started taking acting classes at the age of twelve and starred in his high school's productions of Guys and Dolls and the aforementioned Hairspray.

His first record "Unite" was released on April 21, 2014 on Beatport, and May 5, 2014 on iTunes. His second record, "Totem", was released July 21, 2014 on Beatport and iTunes. His single "To Life", a Bar Mitzvah-themed song, was released in September 2015.

Everywhere I look a killing spree
All the things they wanted me to be
Is all the things that I turned out to be
Ass, titties, pussy, money, weed
Everywhere I look a killing spree
All the things they wanted me to be
Is everything that I like, like, like, like
Everywhere I look a killing spree
All the things they wanted me to be
Is all the things that I turned out to be
Ass, titties, pussy, money, weed
Everywhere I look a killing spree
All the things they wanted me to be
Is everything that I like, like, like, like
Real shit goin' on in Lebanon
But I don't give a fuck, my favorite show is coming on
Hashtag pray for this, pray for that
But you ain't doing shit, get away from that
Blame it on black, blame it on a white
Blame it on a gun, blame it on a Muslim
Everybody wanna blame him, blame her
Just blame it on a mothafucka killing everyone!
Everybody wanna get high, everybody wanna live life like they can't die
Everybody gotta be right
Everybody scrollin', scrollin', thru they life
I wish they would love me like I like they pictures
I wish I had bitches
I wish I had motivation to get money
Ain't it funny, my rainy day would be sunny
If I had the vision of currency fallin' above from the sky
Fallin' above from the sky, listen up
Everybody looking for the meaning of life thru a cell phone screen
Everybody looking for the meaning of life thru a cell phone screen
Everybody think that the meaning of life is
Everybody think that the meaning of life is
Ass, titties, pussy, money, weed
Everywhere I look a killing spree
All the things they wanted me to be
Is all the things that I turned out to be
Ass, titties, pussy, money, weed
Everywhere I look a killing spree
All the things they wanted me to be
Is everything that I like, like, like, like
Ass, titties, pussy, money, weed
Everywhere I look a killing spree
All the things they wanted me to be
Is all the things that I turned out to be
Ass, titties, pussy, money, weed
Everywhere I look a killing spree
All the things they wanted me to be
Is everything that I like, like, like, like
Oh, I know it's hard, I know it's hard like
I know that's the reason you turn up at night
Livin' your life, just livin' your life
Can't nobody tell you how to do it right
Come away with me, come away with me
Let me take you from this world of insanity
Come away with me, come away with me
Far away from flying bullets on this killing spree
Oh, I know, I know
It's hard, yea, it's hard, yea
Yea I know it's hard sometimes
It's hard sometimes
Ass, titties, pussy, money, weed
Everywhere I look a killing spree
All the things they wanted me to be
Is all the things that I turned out to be
Ass, titties, pussy, money, weed
Everywhere I look a killing spree
All the things they wanted me to be
Is everything that I like, like, like, like
The song "Killing Spree" by Ansel Elgort is a psychological reflection on the effects of modern society on an individual's values and perceptions of their own identity. The chorus line, "Ass, titties, pussy, money, weed, everywhere I look a killing spree," is a commentary on the overwhelming sensory and material stimuli present in contemporary culture. The repetition of this line throughout the song emphasizes how the singer is trapped in a cycle of materialism and hedonistic desires, leading to a sense of disillusionment and dissatisfaction.
The first verse delves deeper into this theme, contrasting global issues like the crisis in Lebanon with the self-centered attitudes of individuals who are more preoccupied with their own desires than any real problems in the world. The line "everybody wanna get high, everybody wanna live life like they can't die" is a reflection of the nihilistic outlook that often accompanies this lifestyle. The verse ends with the lyric "I wish they would love me like I like their pictures," which is a poignant reminder of how social media has created a commodification of human interaction, where success is measured in likes and followers.
The final verse shifts in tone, with Elgort offering a reprieve from this cycle by imploring the listener to "come away with me" and escape the insanity. The last line, "It's hard sometimes" is a reminder that even when there is a desire for change or detachment from this materialistic mindset, it is not an easy process and requires conscious effort.
