Change Partners
Antônio Carlos Jobim & Frank Sinatra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Must you dance every dance
With the same fortunate man?
You have danced with him since the music began
Won't you change partners and dance with me?

Must you dance quite so close
With your lips touching his face?
Can't you see
I'm longing to be in his place?
Won't you change partners and dance with me?

Ask him to sit this one out and while you're alone
I'll tell the waiter to tell him he's wanted on the telephone
You've been locked in his arms ever since heaven-knows-when
Won't you change partners and then
You may never want to change partners again

Won't you change partners and then
You may never want to change partners again

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Change Partners" paint a picture of longing and a plea for a chance with someone who is already dancing with another person. The singer expresses their desire for the person they are addressing to "change partners" and dance with them instead. The repeated questioning of why they must continue to dance with the same person implies a sense of frustration and yearning. The singer wants to take the place of the current dance partner and be close to the person they desire, emphasizing their longing to be in their position.

The song suggests that the person being addressed is in a close, intimate dance with their current partner, with their lips touching their partner's face. The singer makes it clear that they want to be in the place of the current partner, indicating that they feel a deep connection and desire to be physically close to the person they're singing to. The mention of asking the current partner to sit out and the singer's intention to communicate their absence to him through the waiter demonstrates their determination to pursue this opportunity and be with the person they desire.

Overall, "Change Partners" explores themes of unrequited love, longing, and the desire for a chance with someone who is already in a relationship. The singer sings with a sense of yearning, hoping that the person they are addressing will change partners and choose to dance with them instead.

Has estado atrapada

I think I've played this song 100 times in a row at some point. Frank's voice mixed with that Bossa nova rhythm is just heaven to the ears.

It really is

@tiffsaver

I only recently discovered this song, and you're right, I just can't stop listening to it.

Frank Sinatra at his very best. Jobim, in a supporting role, complements him perfectly. Their album together is flawless in every detail. Two men at the peak of their talent, singing in a setting requiring no other staging or distractions.

absolutely except Jobim is as good actually better than Frank in my opinion as he wrote most of his songs

@braianlemos

@@shariallison5579 Além de ser maestro, pianista, e arranjador.

@Cruz_ignatius

He was better when he was with Tommy Dorsey

wf you are a ignorant fool, it was frank that requested Jobim to play with him.
