Desafinado
Antônio Carlos Jobim & Gal Cos Lyrics

Desafinado

So you think my singing is off key, my love
You will hurt my feelings
Can't you see, my love
I wish I had and ear like yours
c voice that would behave
But all I have are feelings and
The voices God gave
You insist my music goes against the rules
Yes, but rules were never made for lovesick fools
I wrote this little song for you but you don't care
It's a crooked song, but, oh, my love is there
The thing that you would see, if you would play your part
Is though I might be out of tune,
I have a gentle heart
I took your picture with my trusty Rolliflex
But all I have developed is this complex
Possibly in vain, I hope you'll weaken, oh my love
cnd forget these rigid rules which undermine my dream of
c life of love and music
With someone who understands
That even though I might be out of tune
When I try to say I love you

cll that matters is this message that I bring
When I try to say I love you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Desafinado" by Antônio Carlos Jobim & Gal Cos are a beautiful expression of love and the vulnerability that comes with it. The song begins with the singer being told that their singing is off-key, or out of tune, by their loved one. The singer feels hurt by this criticism and wishes they had the same musical ability as their partner. However, they acknowledge that all they have are their feelings and the voices that they were naturally given.

The singer explains that their music may go against the rules, but rules were never made for lovesick fools like them. They express their love for their partner by writing a song for them, even though the partner seems indifferent. The song may be crooked, or imperfect, but their love is present within it. The singer believes that if their partner would truly listen and understand, they would realize that despite being out of tune, the singer has a gentle heart.

The second half of the song describes the singer's attempts to capture their partner's image with a camera, but they haven't been successful in developing the photo, symbolizing their complex and unresolved emotions. The singer hopes that their partner will eventually weaken and let go of the rigid rules that undermine the singer's dream of a life filled with love and music. They long for someone who understands that even though they may not be perfect, their love remains true. The ultimate message that the singer tries to convey is that when they say "I love you," the only thing that truly matters is the sincerity and depth of that message.

Portuguese has to be the most beautiful language in the world. I was enthralled back in the early '70's, hearing Jobim's music. Have most of his albums, along with a fave of mine - Stan Getz, and all he brought to the sound. I do understand a little, speaking a little Spanish ! We're so lucky to have access to these albums now. For me? It's again. I love it.

I gotta say she has a strong American accent with those Ts and Os
