Change Partners
Antônio Carlos Jobim feat. Frank Sinatra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Must you dance every dance
With the same fortunate man?
You have danced with him since the music began
Won't you change partners and dance with me?

Must you dance quite so close
With your lips touching his face?
Can't you see I'm longing to be in his place?
Won't you change partners and dance with me?

Ask him to sit this one out
While you're alone
I'll tell the waiter to tell him
He's wanted on the telephone

You've been locked in his arms
Ever since heaven knows when

Won't you change partners and then
You may never want to change partners again

Overall Meaning

The song "Change Partners" by Antônio Carlos Jobim feat. Frank Sinatra is about a man who wants to dance with a woman who is dancing with the same fortunate man all night long. The man is clearly in love with the woman and wants her to notice him. He asks her to consider dancing with him instead and maybe she will discover that she never wants to dance with her old partner again.

The lyrics are full of longing and desire as the man describes how he wishes he was the one dancing so close to the woman. He asks her to ask her partner to sit one dance out and allow him the chance to dance with her. The song's bridge suggests that the woman has been in the same man's arms ever since anyone can remember. The lyric shows that change is sometimes necessary and can bring new happiness and excitement into one's life.

One interesting fact about "Change Partners" is that it was originally recorded by composer Antonio Carlos Jobim himself for his album "Antonio Carlos Jobim sings". The song was later featured on Frank Sinatra's 1964 album "Sinatra/Jobim: The Sinatra-Jobim Sessions". Another interesting fact is that the song was later covered by a number of artists including Bing Crosby, Ella Fitzgerald, and The Carpenters.

Has estado atrapada

I think I've played this song 100 times in a row at some point. Frank's voice mixed with that Bossa nova rhythm is just heaven to the ears.

@tiffsaver

I only recently discovered this song, and you're right, I just can't stop listening to it.

Frank Sinatra at his very best. Jobim, in a supporting role, complements him perfectly. Their album together is flawless in every detail. Two men at the peak of their talent, singing in a setting requiring no other staging or distractions.

absolutely except Jobim is as good actually better than Frank in my opinion as he wrote most of his songs

He was better when he was with Tommy Dorsey

wf you are a ignorant fool, it was frank that requested Jobim to play with him.
