Belly of the Beast
Anthrax Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You walk this earth without a heart
You tear the innocent's souls apart
You shovel your conscience into the grave
You walk this earth without a heart
Your uniform couldn't be taken off
A tattoo burned into your flesh
Your mind, your voice
These are your instruments of death
How could you dare to be so bold
You only did as you were told
Marionettes dancing in time
To the apologetic lines
For all the monsters of our time

Who is evil, who is blind?
In the name of who you'll find
A city of souls dying for peace
Welcome to the belly of the beast
One mind, one voice
Welcome to the belly of the beast
Who hears your voice?

Millions, never, never again
Madness, never, never again
Martyrs, dead that can't die
Monsters

Insanity, the normal state
The left hand a hammer, the right the stake
Driven so deep into the heart
It's killing love, it's killing faith
It's killing 'cause it's from the heart
What better way to demoralize
When your own children are your spies
The things you trust are not the same
Trust in death, trust in grief
Trust in hope is trust in pain

Who is evil, who is blind?
In the name of who you'll find
You're not supposed to question faith
But how do you accept this fate?

Millions, you walk this earth without a heart
Madness, tear the innocent's souls apart

Martyrs, shovel your conscience into the grave
Monsters

Overall Meaning

The song "Belly of the Beast" by Anthrax is a political and anti-war song that reflects on the consequences of war and the failures of those who lead them. The lyrics describe those who carry out orders without questioning the morality of their actions and the destruction they cause. The song addresses the ideas of blind obedience, betrayal of trust, and demoralization of society due to the brutality of war. The chorus of the song asks the question, "Who is evil, who is blind?" inquiring about the blurred lines of morality during times of war.

The lyrics also touch on the concept of martyrdom and how those who follow orders become martyrs, dying for a cause that they may not even understand. The song describes the state of mind of those who are driven by power and greed, and how they manipulate society to follow their political agendas. The final lyrics declare that those who engage in such actions are "monsters" who lack a heart and tear the innocent's souls apart.

Sean

Charlie Benante is without a doubt one of the most underrated drummers in thrash metal, or metal in general. He's my favorite.

Kieran O'Leary

So, according to that reliable opinion poll of "Sean", nobody appreciates Charlie like you do, therefore he must be underrated? Brilliant.

Wilder The Wolf

@Kieran O'Leary idk but Charlie is indeed underrated. I think he is the most underrated.

grahamjarman

anthrax is pretty big for metal band, charlie is a huge reason for that.

Flea Tactical

You're dating yourself. Charlie has received many, many accolades over the years, particularly at the height of thrash in the 90's.

cygnus1965

Can’t really make that statement without Frank Bello’s name
I’m there. The two of them are the backbone of the band and they are just perfect

These guys just have so much fun while making music, with such awesome riffs and powerfull lyrics. You just can't help yourself and just enjoy it.

Marin Hrabrić

i wish they go back to making these kind of albums. horsing around having fun, while still making a killer album with the classic anthrax sound. i'm fine even with the new sound as long as the new album has the killer riffs like they had in the first 5 albums

some polish girl

Anthrax is awesome.

civilian

I agree, but these lyrics are damn dark. It's about the holocaust and such. So not exactly light topics, but I'm sure they had fun making this.
