Hanging On The Telephone
Antillectual Lyrics

If you don't answer, I'll just ring it off the wall
I know he's there, but I just had to call
Don't leave me hanging on the telephone
Don't leave me hanging on the telephone
I heard your mother now she's going out the door
Did she go to work or just go to the store
All those things she said, I told you to ignore
Oh why can't we talk again
Oh why can't we talk again
Don't leave me hanging on the telephone
Don't leave me hanging on the telephone
It's good to hear your voice, you know it's been so long
If I don't get your call then everything goes wrong
I want to tell you something you've known all along
Don't leave me hanging on the telephone
I had to interrupt and stop this conversation
Your voice across the line gives me a strange sensation
I'd like to talk when I can show you my affection
Oh I can't control myself
Oh I can't control myself
Oh I can't control myself
Don't leave me hanging on the telephone
Hang up and run to me
Whoah, hang up and run to me
Whoah, hang up and run to me
Whoah, hang up and run to me
Whoah oh oh oh run to me
The lyrics to Antillectual's song "Hanging on the Telephone" depict a desperate yearning for connection and communication with someone. The singer is in a phone booth, anxiously waiting for the person on the other end to answer. The urgency is palpable as the singer even threatens to ring the phone off the wall if they don't receive a response. There is a sense of longing and frustration as the singer knows the person is there but feels ignored or neglected.
The song also touches upon the singer's desire to reconnect with someone they haven't spoken to in a long time. They express that not hearing from this person throws everything off balance and makes everything go wrong. It's clear that the singer deeply values this relationship and wants to have a conversation to address the issues that have arisen.
The third verse adds a twist to the narrative. The singer interrupts the conversation and expresses the desire to show their affection when they can talk in person. There is a sense of not being able to contain their excitement, as indicated by the line "Oh I can't control myself." It shows a deeper emotional connection beyond just the need for conversation.
In the chorus, the repeated plea of not wanting to be left hanging on the telephone reinforces the theme of longing for connection and the fear of being ignored or rejected.
Overall, "Hanging on the Telephone" portrays the anxiety, desperation, and longing one can experience in wanting to communicate with someone and the fear of being left hanging.
