Tom, I remember hearing this at my Aunt's home in Virginia in 1964, played on an old Victrola. Caruso's voice absolutely filled the room. It made me cry. It still does.

I don't pay attention to the lyrics at all - only when uploading a video and wanting to provide the lyrics too (some people are very interested in the lyrics). Caruso's ability to communicate the emotional and conceptional essence of a song /an aria/ a role (aside from his technical perfection) is so outstanding that I dare say it has not been surpassed since. With the words of Richard Strauss: "He sings the soul of the melody."

The voice of god. At the 3min. point his glorious crescendo and diminuendo warms my soul. And to think he was dying of emphasema(I think). God bless Caruso.

His voice wasn't in its best state by this point (he was seriously ill) but the passion in his singing was never greater than in those last years. He was always evolving as a musician and artist despite his health gradually deteriorating. I find that when I listen to Caruso I don't even pay attention to the lyrics, yet I feel I know exactly what he is singing about. It's a wonderful feeling!

Tom , the words are taken from the fourth book of ayres by the english poet Thomas Campion and adapted to the melody so they don't fit exactly. I have always loved Caruso's voice ever since I was a child and I have always been particularly moved by this song. If more people listened to music like this the world would be a much nicer place Regards Bella Jane

@31operafan: a somewhat late response to you comment ... Caruso spoke some 7 languages including Russian, but for some reason he had difficulties with English. He certainly was not an educated man. He went to school for 3 years - the family had troubles paying the school fees. - He was not what you'd call illiterate, but he did have troubles reading his whole life.

Yes, Caruso was a real professional - ever evolving and finding new techniques. He intended to and was learning new ways all time. His formal singing education/lessons were rudimentary at best. - I just wonder how he would have developed if he had been subjected to the modern formal indoctrination...

No ! I "think" he is singing English here (at least from the title of the song..). I meant in arias/songs where he is singing in French, I can clearly hear that it is French, but when he sings in English, it might as well be Chinese :-)

I speak French quite well, but when he is singing French, it is not 'obvious'... let's say 'in the limits of tolerance'. I loved that part 'it might as well be Chinese'. If there were some favourites to comment quotation, that would go straight to it. :-)

His French pronunciation was MUCH better than his English - at least I can hear that it IS French. With his English I most of the time cannot hear the words at all :-)

Do you mean he is singing in French?? Well, do I agree with what you say of his French pronounciation being better -- but I certainly do not recognize any French at all here. I would risk it is a mixture of Italian with English. (It is like mushrooms with risotto instead of risotto with mushrooms.) And also considering the title of the song.
