I'm one of those people who like to see the lyrics. Here's what I hear him singing. It departs a little from Campion's original.

Love me or not, love her I must or die.
Leave me or not, follow her needs must I.
O that her grace would my wished comforts give!
How rich in her, how happy I should live!
Love me or not, love her I must or die.
Leave me or not, follow her needs must I.

Could I enchant, and that it lawful were.
Her would I charm softly that none should hear
All my delight, all my desire should be
Her to adore, her to unite with me
Love me or not, love her I must or die.
Leave me or not, follow her needs must I.

Tom, I remember hearing this at my Aunt's home in Virginia in 1964, played on an old Victrola. Caruso's voice absolutely filled the room. It made me cry. It still does.

Grazie per questo video

Thanks, Bella Jane. I had no idea the words were almost 400 years old. Indeed, very moving.

I don't pay attention to the lyrics at all - only when uploading a video and wanting to provide the lyrics too (some people are very interested in the lyrics). Caruso's ability to communicate the emotional and conceptional essence of a song /an aria/ a role (aside from his technical perfection) is so outstanding that I dare say it has not been surpassed since. With the words of Richard Strauss: "He sings the soul of the melody."

@goodboybuddy1

The voice of god. At the 3min. point his glorious crescendo and diminuendo warms my soul. And to think he was dying of emphasema(I think). God bless Caruso.

AWESOME

@GermanOperaSinger

His voice wasn't in its best state by this point (he was seriously ill) but the passion in his singing was never greater than in those last years. He was always evolving as a musician and artist despite his health gradually deteriorating. I find that when I listen to Caruso I don't even pay attention to the lyrics, yet I feel I know exactly what he is singing about. It's a wonderful feeling!

@tomfroekjaer

Yes, true. Another one where he pronounces very clearly (French) is in Cantique de Noël. Tom

@UncleNathan Great memory of yours... IMO this was the greatness of Enrico: his ability to touch souls with his own beauty soul. Extraordinay intimacy - the rare ability to divulge and communicate feelings. The very reason I made this YT channel.

@tomfroekjaer

You may be right about him fitting the words for better sound effect. I don't speak much Italian, but I'll take your word for it, Al :-)
