The best thing about this terrific version of the play is the clarity of the dialogue.  You can hear every word of it.  And Maurice Evans is a revelation.........

At the age of 14 I saw this production on PBS and was enchanted by everything in it. I'm seeing it again many years later and the enchantment is not less. I studied both undergraduate and graduate drama and I've attended three live productions of The Tempest - all of them were ruined by miscasting of the actors who could not handle the language. The great Richard Burton, with his unmistakable gravelly voice, brings off Caliban with real power. The Tempest is an extremely difficult play to bring off - this production is superb both in visual scenic design and in the acting.

My drama teacher - many many many years ago - told us about going to see Evans in the Scottish Play. They sat down front to see the Great Man in action and discovered that he basically spat on the first 5 rows. <snerk>

Roddy McDowell changed my life with his utterly perfect portrayal of Ariel. I chose my career and never wavered because of his performance. When he passed away my first thought was “oh my gosh, I wish I had told him!” Magic. I see this play at every opportunity and I have NEVER seen anyone do it better. I was 8. I am now 70. :) He is still perfect and beautiful. It is heavily edited, much MUCH shorter than the complete play, but to an 8 year old it was enchanting. My mom had to “translate.” I remember asking breathlessly, “Mama what are they saying” and she would summarize. Apart from its being shortened, it is still a beautiful production. Of course the other treat, the one I had NO idea of at the time, was seeing Richard Burton as a very, very young actor at the beginning of his career as a wonderful version of Caliban.

Yes, I watched that broadcast at the age of 14 and never forgot it. I was so ignorant of McDowell's training, and his Ariel is by far the best I've ever seen. And BURTON! His Caliban is intelligent, sly, resentful, vengeful - a mess, but a really smart mess. The Tempest is a very difficult play to bring off on stage - I've seen three productions live since and they were all inadequate. This one was close to perfect.

@Paula DeMichele This adaption of Tempest reminds me of an adaptation that should have been made and released into movie theatres in 1984, presented by Paramount Pictures, directed by Jim Henson. Starring Shaun Connery as Prospero along with Jenny Aguiter, Ted Wass, David Ogden Stieres, Tony Robinson and Bob Hoskins.
What do you think it would be like if that film adaptation was made? Please tell me.

This is better than than later digital films of the tempest with their whispered dialogue and where you can barely hear a word! The sets and costumes on this are also more imaginative and inventive. You can actually hear the play.
