One Note Samba
Antonion Carlos Jobim Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

This is just a little samba
Built upon a single note
Other notes are bound to follow
But the root is still that note
Now this new one is the consequence
Of the one we've just been through
As I'm bound to be the unavoidable
consequence of you

There's so many people who can
talk and talk and talk
And just say nothing
Or nearly nothing
I have used up all the scale I know
And at the end I've come to nothing
Or nearly nothing

So I came back to my first note
As I must come back to you
I will pour into that one note
All the love I feel for you
Anyone who wants the whole show
Re mi fa sol la si do

He will find himself with no show
Better play the note you know

Overall Meaning

The song "One Note Samba" by Antonion Carlos Jobim is all about simplicity and staying true to oneself. The first verse states that the entire samba is built upon a single note, which means that every other note that follows is an extension of the original note. The singer is using this idea as a metaphor for life, where the choices we make today can have a ripple effect on our future.

The next verse talks about the consequence of our actions. The singer believes that every new note is a consequence of the note that came before it, just like every new experience in life is a result of the choices we've made in the past. The verse about people who talk too much but say nothing is a nod to the idea that sometimes, we complicate things unnecessarily. The singer reaches a point where he feels like he has explored all the options available to him, and he is left with nothing but his original note.

The final verse is about returning to one's roots. The singer has used up all the notes he knows, and he is left with the one he started with. He realizes that this is also true of his love for someone. He must return to the person he loves, and pour all his emotions into that one note. This is a song about coming full circle and appreciating the simplicity of life.

This was the backdrop music to my life during my high school and college years. Thank you Tom Jobim and RIP.

The opposite and chromatic movement of both very spread notes (the bass' B and the high violins' A) at 1:48 is simply remarkable. A very successful touch of transparency by Ogerman totally in agreement with of the bossa nova style.
