Ape on the Roof was started as a collaborative project between Utari Syaukat and Aghi Naratama when they studied in Seattle. Their music explores acoustic and electronic sound, accompanied by Tari’s voice. Tari often writes lyrics that play with imaginary symbol and irony, besides her personal criticism on daily Jakarta’s urban surroundings. Their first self-titled album (Ape on the Roof, 2003), gained some positive response from music fans in Seattle. After they moved to Jakarta, they continued their collaborative project. This time they involved more talent from Jakarta’s music scene, including DJ OREO a.k.a AGE (The Jonis), Iman (LAIN, ZEKE & THE POPO), Bemby Gusti (LAIN, SORE), Lens (THE MISKINS), Fe (ex JINGGA), Batman (Goodnite Electric), Agrikulture (DJ ANTON, DJ HOGI), and Junko (HERDY, DJ WINKY).
