The laboratory is part of the Aperture Science Laboratory, researching psychoacoustics to enhance the immersive and multidimensional experience generated by Valve's most widely lauded game, Portal and its successor Portal 2.

Oh my god, I just got it. Atlas and P-body were opening up a vault that housed thousands of dormant test subjects to be used for testing. That's us, we are the thousands of test subjects as we play community test chambers. If you manage to see yourself in a community test chamber, all you see is a hopping person icon, which represents the test subjects being deployed after the co-op mission. Clever.
