Ruby
Apples in Stereo Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Ruby
Oh baby don't you know
Girl, your silence hurts me so
Are you listening
Ruby
Oh baby can't you see
It's the source of misery
Are you listening

Troubles
They seem to follow me
As far as I can see,
It must be my destiny
Troubles
They carry you around
From the crib into the ground
They will never set you down

Mm la la la

Ruby
Oh baby can't you see
I'm so sad it's killing me
Are you listening
Ruby
If you like to think out loud
It might really help me out
Are you listening girl

Troubles
They seem to follow me
As far as I can see it must be my destiny
Troubles
They carry you around
From the crib into the ground
They will never set you down

Mm la la la

Ba ba ba baa

Are you listening girl?

Mm are you listening yea

Troubles
They seem to follow me
As far as I can see it must be my destiny
Troubles
They carry you around
From the crib into the ground
They will never set you down

Mm la la la

Are you listening girl?

Ba ba ba baa

Are you listening girl
Are you listening
Are you listening

Are you listening
Are you listening girl

Overall Meaning

The song "Ruby" by Apples in Stereo is a heart-wrenching plea from the singer to a girl called Ruby. The singer is driven to despair by the girl's silence and lack of communication, which he believes is a source of misery. In the first stanza, he implores her to listen and understand how her behavior affects him deeply. The chorus repeats this sentiment, emphasizing the impact of silence on the singer's emotions.

The second stanza describes the singer's experience with troubles that seem to follow him everywhere he goes. He feels like it is his destiny to be surrounded by these problems that weigh him down. The chorus repeats, this time with an added line about how troubles follow people from "the crib into the ground," suggesting that they are ever-present throughout life.

The final stanza is a desperate plea for Ruby to listen and help the singer with his sadness. He suggests that if she speaks up and shares her thoughts, it might help him out of his despair. The ending of the song repeats the same phrases, as if to emphasize how important it is for Ruby to hear the singer's message.

Overall, "Ruby" is a poignant and relatable song that delves into themes of communication, relationship dynamics, and personal struggles. The singer's vulnerability and pain are palpable in the simple but effective lyrics, making it a timeless piece of indie rock.
