Madre
Arca/Oliver Coates Lyrics

Yo recuerdo amenazas a cuchillo
Riñas animales
Madre mía, madre mía yo no supe qué hacer
Ante tus poderes descomunales
Madre mía, yo he heredado tu abismo
Yo he heredado tus abismos descomunales
El cordón umbilical nunca se cortó
Hasta que lo hice yo
Madre mía, celestial
Eres para siempre, para siempre madre mía
Mi origen y mi fin
The lyrics of "Madre" by Arca/Oliver Coates delve into a complex and emotionally charged exploration of the artist's relationship with their mother. The repetition of "mother mine" and the use of endearing terms like "my dear" convey a deep sense of affection and attachment.
The first verse paints a vivid picture of the mother figure, with references to her flowing hair like waterfalls and lips stained with a deep red resembling blood. The mention of her heels announces her presence, suggesting a certain power or authority she holds.
The second verse delves into darker aspects of the relationship. The sound of hammers echoes through the hallways, alluding to a potentially violent atmosphere. The artist recalls threats with knives and animalistic fights, hinting at a turbulent and intense dynamic.
The third verse expresses the artist's confusion and helplessness in the face of their mother's immense power. They admit to not knowing how to navigate the situation or protect themselves from her overwhelming influence.
The fourth verse portrays a complex mix of inherited traits and a desire for forgiveness and redemption. The artist acknowledges that they have inherited their mother's abyss, implying they possess a similar depth or darkness within them. Yet, they also express a willingness to forgive and accept their mother's flaws, acknowledging that she was more than enough for them.
The repetition of "mother mine" in the chorus demonstrates a deep emotional connection that transcends words. The artist suggests they have learned their mother's language, but they still refuse to speak it, perhaps out of a desire to forge their own path or distance themselves from her influence.
The suffering expressed in the line "it hurts in my soul, it hurts everything in me" reflects the profound impact this relationship has had on the artist. The decision to create distance was the only option for self-preservation, leading them to transform into their mother in some way, blurring the line between identity and inheritance.
The final verse juxtaposes irony and joy, highlighting the paradoxical nature of this relationship. The artist recognizes that they have inherited their mother's immense abysses, suggesting a shared depth and complexity. The mention of the umbilical cord that was never cut until they took the action themselves symbolizes a final severing of ties and the artist's journey towards independence.
Ultimately, the lyrics honor the mother figure as something celestial, recognizing her as both the artist's origin and their ultimate destination. It is a complex and multifaceted portrayal of a mother-child relationship, navigating the conflicting emotions of love, pain, inheritance, and personal growth.

y perdonarte, madre."

Mother of mine, mother of mine
Mother of mine, mother of mine
My dear
Mother of mine, I remember
Mother of mine, your hair like waterfalls
Mother of mine, your lips painted a bloody red.

Mother of mine, hammer blows could be heard down the hallways
Mother of mine, let's face the facts
Mother of mine, the umbilical cord was never cut

Mother of mine, mother of mine
Mother of mine, my dear
Mother of mine
There are no more words left to say

All of me hurts me
Distance was but my only option, my only option
I feel myself turn into you
Mother of mine, what an irony
Mother of mine, what a joy
I have inherited your immense abysses
The umbilical cord was never cut
Until I cut it
Mother of mine, heavenly
You are forever, forever
Mother of mine
My origin and my end.

I am saddened to hear, what is broken can be healed in time especially with self-love and therapy. My own mother loved me unconditionally and I was heartbroken to learn that not everyone has experienced a loving mother (or parents for that matter) as I believe that to be a blessing that everyone should experience. All I can say is that humans are not infallible and sometimes as parents they make mistakes or are downright cruel and as a child it is SO important to have proper nurturing, it is unfair to experience as a child but it shows that they are just human. All I can say is that you are not the damage they did to you nor do you have to continue to carry the pain and hurt that may ail you currently. Your happiness is in your own hands. Forgiveness helps one to move on as well and leave the pain behind, not so much forgiveness of the parent if you cannot bring yourself to forgive them which is completely understandable but rather forgiveness of what has transpired and the unfair and unjust actions taken against you simply so you no longer have to hold onto the burden, the pain, the anguish.
I wish you all inner peace and happiness, may you all find the light once more and may all the pain and anguish find healing. In case no has said so yet, you are loved just as you are seemingly "broken" or not. 💜
