Madre
Arca feat. Oliver Coates Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Yo recuerdo amenazas a cuchillo
Riñas animales

Madre mía, madre mía yo no supe qué hacer
Ante tus poderes descomunales

Madre mía, yo he heredado tu abismo

Yo he heredado tus abismos descomunales
El cordón umbilical nunca se cortó
Hasta que lo hice yo

Madre mía, celestial

Eres para siempre, para siempre madre mía
Mi origen y mi fin

Overall Meaning

In the song "Madre" by Arca feat. Oliver Coates, the lyrics express a complex and emotional relationship between the singer and their mother. The repetition of "Madre mía, madre mía" at the beginning of the song conveys a sense of reverence and intimacy towards the mother figure. The phrase "Mi querida" further emphasizes the deep connection and love the singer has for their mother.

The imagery of the mother's hair being described as "como cataratas" and her lips as "colorados de un rojo sangriento" paints a picture of a powerful and striking woman. The mention of her high heels and the sound of "martillazos" (hammer blows) in the hallways suggest a sense of authority and perhaps even violence in the relationship. The reference to threats with a knife and animal fights highlights the intense and possibly turbulent nature of their interactions.

The singer expresses feelings of confusion and powerlessness in the face of their mother's overwhelming presence. The line "Ante tus poderes descomunales" suggests a sense of being overpowered or controlled by the mother figure, while also hinting at a sense of admiration for her strength and intensity. The reference to inheriting the mother's "abismo" (abyss) and eventually forgiving her reinforces the complexity of their relationship and the deep impact she has had on the singer's life.

The closing lines of the song reflect a sense of acceptance and transformation. The singer acknowledges the pain and distance in their relationship with the mother, recognizing that they have become more like her in some ways. The imagery of the umbilical cord being cut symbolizes a separation and a sense of independence from the mother's influence, while still acknowledging her as a powerful and eternal presence in their life. The final lines, "Mi origen y mi fin" (My origin and my end), encapsulate the deep and enduring connection between the singer and their mother, despite the complexities and challenges that may have defined their relationship.

y perdonarte, madre."

English translation:

Mother of mine, mother of mine
Mother of mine, mother of mine
My dear
Mother of mine, I remember
Mother of mine, your hair like waterfalls
Mother of mine, your lips painted a bloody red.

Mother of mine, your high heels announced their presence
Mother of mine, hammer blows could be heard down the hallways
Mother of mine, let's face the facts
Mother of mine, the umbilical cord was never cut
I remember knife threats, animal brawls

Mother of mine, mother of mine
I didn't know what to do
Upon your uncommon/immense powers
Mother of mine, I have inherited your abyss
Mother of mine, I forgive you
You were more than enough

Mother of mine, mother of mine
Mother of mine, my dear
Mother of mine
There are no more words left to say
I learned your language
But I still refuse to speak it.

It hurts my soul
All of me hurts me
Distance was but my only option, my only option
I feel myself turn into you

Mother of mine, what an irony
Mother of mine, what a joy
I have inherited your immense abysses
The umbilical cord was never cut
Until I cut it

Mother of mine, heavenly
You are forever, forever
Mother of mine
My origin and my end.

my mom is the main reason for all the broken parts in my brain and heart - this hits very close to home, in a good way though. thankyou arca

@Tullece

I am saddened to hear, what is broken can be healed in time especially with self-love and therapy. My own mother loved me unconditionally and I was heartbroken to learn that not everyone has experienced a loving mother (or parents for that matter) as I believe that to be a blessing that everyone should experience. All I can say is that humans are not infallible and sometimes as parents they make mistakes or are downright cruel and as a child it is SO important to have proper nurturing, it is unfair to experience as a child but it shows that they are just human. All I can say is that you are not the damage they did to you nor do you have to continue to carry the pain and hurt that may ail you currently. Your happiness is in your own hands. Forgiveness helps one to move on as well and leave the pain behind, not so much forgiveness of the parent if you cannot bring yourself to forgive them which is completely understandable but rather forgiveness of what has transpired and the unfair and unjust actions taken against you simply so you no longer have to hold onto the burden, the pain, the anguish.

I wish you all inner peace and happiness, may you all find the light once more and may all the pain and anguish find healing. In case no has said so yet, you are loved just as you are seemingly "broken" or not. 💜
