Instinct
Arcane Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I had an instinct to fly.
We had it all figured out, you and I.
Traced endless roads in your skin,
we walked the water we owned.
I had an instinct to run,
but I was flesh and bone… for once.
Down by the water, she fell.
We promised blood to the bone.
Dive headfirst into the well,
where I was welcomed home,
with open arms.
I had an instinct to run.
I had an instinct to fly.
We had it all figured out, you and I.
We ran out in colour…
We ran down like water.
The opening lyrics of Arcane's song Instinct suggest a desire to escape, to flee from something or someone, with an overwhelming sense of urgency. The singer initially reveals two urges that he could no longer keep at bay, an instinct to run and an instinct to fly. This strong inclination may indicate that something is pressing, that they are trying to avoid something. However, the lyrics then hint at a previous decision, which they had both made together and had figured out everything. The lyrics suggest that although they had planned everything out, something has gone wrong, and now he is forced to follow his instincts, ultimately making it difficult for him.
The next section of the song takes us through their history together, and the scars and memories that were created as a result. The singer describes tracing endless roads on her skin, they walked the water that they owned, and he confesses that while he always had an instinct to run, he was flesh and bone for once. The following section seems to be the climax of the song, where the lovers make a promise to each other, to have a bond as strong as blood into the bone. Then, they both dive headfirst into the well, where he was welcomed home with open arms. Thus, the song ends with the chorus, which indicates that they ran and that they ran out in colour and down like water, a fitting end to their journey.
