It ain't necessary so
Aretha Franklin Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It ain't necessarily so
It ain't necessarily so
The things that you're liable
To read in the Bible,
It ain't necessarily so.

Now David was small but oh my
Little David was small but oh my
He fought big Goliath
Who lay down and dieth
David was small but oh my.

To get into heaven, don't snap for a second
Live clean forget your faults
I take the gospel whenever it's possible
But with a grain of salt

Oh Jonah he lived in a whale
Oh Jonah he lived in a whale
He made his home in
That fishes abdomen
Oh Jonah he lived in a whale

To get into heaven, don't snap for a seven
Live clean forget your faults
I take gospel whenever it's possible
But with a grain of salt

Methuselah lived 900 years
Methuselah lived 900 years
Who calls that livin'
When no gal will give in
To no man what's 900 years

It ain't necessarily so
It ain't necessarily so
The things that you're liable
To read in the Bible,
It ain't necessarily so.

Ain't necessarily so

Ain't necessarily so
Ain't necessarily so

Overall Meaning

"It Ain't Necessarily So" is a song famously sung by Aretha Franklin, and it speaks to the notion that what one reads in the Bible mustn't be wholly truthful. Instead, the song proclaims, it ain't necessarily so. The song speaks of how some of the stories and teachings in the Bible, such as Methuselah's age or Jonah's home in a whale, may not be wholly accurate. The song advises that the listeners take the gospel and the words of the Bible with a grain of salt, that is, not to take it verbatim.
The song is a result of the culture of people in the world preferring to question traditional beliefs, and thus Franklin's spin on the matter is a firm-rebuttal of the church's rhetoric. She professes that while things may be taught to us as right and good, there is some grey area, and we ought to embrace that. Franklin employs the story of David and Goliath, and how the former defeated the latter, despite his size disadvantage, to drive her point home that things are not always as they appear in the world.

Thanks to the FInancial Times for bringing me to this recording. I've always loved Porgy and Bess and this rendition by Aretha Franklin is beautiful.

@puppetlady1

Many artists have attempted this song, but Aretha does it justice.

The Queen!! But an odd song for a singer with roots in the church-going Gospel-singing community to be indulging! This was one of my favourite songs as a little girl (Normie Rowe version—big hit in Australia in the 60s). But Aretha, once again, does this like no other!
