Rolling in the Deep
Aretha Franklin Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There's a fire burning in my heart
Reaching a fever pitch and it's bringing me out of the dark
Finally I can see you crystal clear
Go ahead and sell me out and I'll lay your ship bare
See how I will leave with every part of you
Don't underestimate the things that I will do
There's a fire burning in my heart
Reaching a fever pitch and it's bringing me out the dark

The scars of your love remind me of us
It keeps me thinking that we almost had it all
The scars of your love they keep me breathless, I can't help thinking

We could have had it all (You're gonna wish you never had met me)
Rolling in the deep (Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)
You had my heart inside of your hand (You're gonna wish you never had met me)
But you played it to the beat (Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)

Baby I have no story to be told
But I've heard one on you and I'm gonna make your head burn, woah
Think of me in the depths of your despair
Making a home down there 'cause mine sure won't be shared

The scars of your love remind me of us
It keeps me thinking that we almost had it all
The scars of your love keep me breathless, I can't help thinking

We could have had it all (You're gonna wish you never had met me)
Rolling in the deep (Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)
You had my heart inside of your hand (You're gonna wish you never had met me)
But you played it to the beat (Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)

We could have had it all (You're gonna wish you never had met me)
Rolling in the deep (Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)
You had my heart inside of your hand (You're gonna wish you never had met me)
But you played it to the beat (Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)
To the beat beat beat beat

Throw your soul through every open door
Count your blessings to find what you look for
Turned my sorrow into treasured gold
You pay me back in kind and reap just what you sow

You know that there ain't no mountain high enough (I'm still in love with you)
Ain't no valley low enough
Ain't no river wide enough
To keep me from getting to you (There ain't no mountain)

You know that there ain't no mountain high enough (There ain't no mountain)
Ain't no valley low enough
Ain't no river wide enough (I'll be there oh baby)
To keep me from getting to you babe (Yes I will)

We could have had it all
Rolling in the deep
You had my heart inside of your hand
But you played it to the beat (Rolling in the deep)

We could have had it all (You're gonna wish you never had met me)
Rolling in the deep (Tears are gonna fall)
I'm still in love with you, yes I am (Rolling in the deep, you're gonna wish you)

Oh yeah, oh yeah (Rolling in the deep)
Oh come on, yeah (You're gonna wish you never had met me)

Overall Meaning

Aretha Franklin’s version of the song "Rolling in the Deep" is a soulful rendition of the original song by Adele. This song is about heartbreak and how the person who was once damaged by the relationship, rises up stronger than ever before. The first verse of the song reveals a fire burning in the singer's heart, bringing her out of darkness. She now sees the other person clearly and knows that they will sell her out. Yet, the singer asserts that they will take every part of the other person and not underestimate what she's capable of doing.

The second verse suggests that the scars from the relationship remind the singer of what they had, and what could've been. The next verse continues to express the singer's triumph over the other person, exclaiming that she has no story to be told, but this person certainly does. The last verse of the song suggests that there is nothing that can keep the singer from overcoming the other person, with the repetition of "ain't no mountain high enough", "ain’t no valley low enough", "ain’t no river wide enough" - this emphasizes the determination of the singer and her willingness to overcome any obstacle.

Overall, this song is about the pain of heartbreak, the scars it leaves, and the strength that comes from overcoming it.

@miracleofsound

It's very blatantly autotuned, which is a pity because Aretha doesn't need that.

@TamaraKokorush

There is a live version on yt, its amazing ! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3k5acPIi0f8

@hr8290

The issue is that clearly her singing is fine and didn't need it... Whoever the audio engineer was on this probably doesn't have their job anymore

@peterjaylewis

I agree. Having said that, some of her vocal riffs are unforgivable.

@camiloyo5129

maybe they used that distortion to reduce the raspiness of her voice, clearly she doesn't need pitch correction.

@mrmike4066

She didn't use auto tune she was asked about this and didn't even know what it was and thought it was ridiculous

Anyone who can sing like this in their 70's and has cancer is a legend and truly gifted. Much respect and awe. RIP Aretha.

@GoA7250

Truth.

@MegaBorgqueen

Aretha has been in the music industry before the parents of adele had met but what caused me admiration is that rather adele admiring aretha is the other way around.

@marshalmarrs3269

Is the Aretha version of rolling in the deep the original version?
