Today I Sing the Blues
Aretha Franklin Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Without a word of warning
The blues walked in this morning
And circled aroundnd my lonely room
I didn't know why I had
That sad and lonely feeling
Until my baby said we're through

Yesterday this time, I sang a love song
But today I'm singin' the blues

Now, I know the explanation
But to me that's no consolation
No, no, it just goes to show you
No matter how your love
Everybody's got to lose
And since I've lost
I'd rather walk around and worry
I guess I just walked the darkest avenues

Yesterday this time, I sang a love song
But today, my story's a little different, people
I'm singing the blues, yeah, yeah, yeah

Now it strikes me kind of funny
How love can be this way
'Cause we were lovers last night, honey
Oh, but I'm sittin' alone again today
And it strikes me kind of funny, yeah
How faith can be so unfair
'Cause I seem to come out on the losin' end
Of every, every love affair, yeah
It's got to be written somewhere for me
That I should be the one to always lose

But yesterday at this time, I sang a love song

Oh, oh, right now I'm singin' the blues, yeah, yeah
I'm singin' the blues

Overall Meaning

Today I Sing the Blues by Aretha Franklin is a classic blues song that embodies the universal experience of heartbreak. The song starts with the singer experiencing an unexpected visit from the blues, which come in the form of a sad and lonely feeling. The singer soon learns that the cause of her blues is the end of her relationship with her lover. She laments the unfairness of love and seems resigned to her fate of always losing in love. The singer contrasts her present state with the past when she sang love songs instead of the blues.

The song's strength lies in its ability to convey the deep emotions that come with heartbreak. The suddenness of the blues' arrival shows how all-consuming heartbreak can be. The song also explores the feeling of powerlessness that comes with heartbreak. The singer tries to rationalize her fate, but ultimately accepts that some things are beyond her control. The contrast between the love song and the blues emphasizes the transience of love and the inevitability of heartbreak. The song ends on a melancholic note, with the singer accepting that she must sing the blues for now.

Overall, Today I Sing the Blues is a timeless classic that captures the essence of heartbreak. The song is notable for its emotive vocals, powerful lyrics and memorable melody.

RIP Aretha.

For me, the greatest soul singer of them all, male or female.

Unlike others, she never faltered, shared too much or tried too hard.

When Aretha sang, she just told us how it was. And did it with incredible strength, power and absolute conviction.

She seemed not so much to sing, only open her mouth and be. And she did it from the start to the end.

Here she is in 1960 with her first studio-recorded single. Aged 17, having had two kids, she's already all Aretha … telling us how it is.

And as she often did, after having held you warm and close the whole song, she waits until the last 20 seconds to do what she will with your heart.

Makes me smile my ass-off. Such brilliance. I could listen forever.

Without a word of warnin'
The blues walked in this mornin'
And circled around my lonely room.

I didn't know why I had that sad 'n lonely feelin'
Until my baby called and said we were through, hooo.

For yesterday this time I sang a lovesong
But today... I'm singing the blues.

Now, I know the explanation
But to me that's no consolation
No, no, it just goes to show you
No matter how you love, everybody has got to lose
And since I've lost, I'd rather walk around and woe
I guess I just walk the darkest avenue

For yesterday this time I sang a lovesong
But today... I'm singing the blues.

Now, it strikes me kinda funny how love can be this way
'Cause we were lovin' 'til last night honey, yeah.
I'm alone again today

And it strikes me kinda funny how fate can be so unfair
'Cos I seem to come right on the losin' end in every, every love affair!

Yes it must be, it must be meant for me that I should be the one,
Be the one to always lose, hooo.

For yesterday this time I sang a lovesong
But right now... I'm singing the blues.
