Until You Come Back to Me
Aretha Franklin Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Though you don't call anymore
I sit and wait in vain
I guess I'll rap on your door (your door)
Tap on your window pane (tap on your window pane)
I wanna tell you, baby
Changes I've been going through (ooh)
Missing you, listen, you
'Til you come back to me that's what I'm gonna do

Why did you have to decide
You had to set me free?
I'm gonna swallow my pride (my pride)
I'm gonna beg you to please, baby, please see me (you never want to see me)
I'm gonna walk by myself
Just to prove that my love is true (ooh)
All for you, baby
'Til you come back to me that's what I'm gonna do

Living for you, my dear
Is like living in a world of constant tears
Hear my plea (hear my plea)
I've got to make you see (make you see)
That our love is dying (our love is dying)

Although your phone you ignore
Somehow I must, somehow I must, somehow I must explain
I'm gonna rap on your door (your door)
Tap on your window pane (tap on your window pane)
I'm gonna camp by your steps
Until I get through to you (ooh)
I've got to change your view, baby
'Til you come back to me that's what I'm gonna do
'Til you come back to me that's what I'm gonna do
'Til you come back to me that's what I'm gonna do

I'm gonna rap on your door (tap on)
Tap on your window pane (tap on)
Open, open out baby, I'm gonna rap on your door (tap on)
Tap on your, tap on your (tap on)
Tap on your, tap on your window pane (tap on your window pane)
I'm gonna rap on your door (tap on)

I'm gonna tap on your window pane (tap on)
Open out, baby

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Aretha Franklin's song "Until You Come Back To Me" describe the yearning of a woman who is deeply in love with a man who has chosen to leave her. The singer expresses her frustration and sadness at the fact that her former lover has stopped calling her, but she still sits and waits for him to return. She decides to approach him and rap on his door, tap on his window pane, and plead with him to come back to her. She acknowledges that she has been going through changes and missing him terribly. She vows to do whatever it takes to win him back, even swallowing her pride, walking alone, and camping by his steps until he sees that their love is dying and needs to be saved.

The song is a poignant and heartbreaking depiction of the pain of unrequited love. The singer's desperation and determination to win back her lover are palpable in every line, and her vulnerability makes the message all the more powerful. The lyrics are simple yet evocative, and the melody is hauntingly beautiful, making it a staple of R&B playlists and romantic ballad collections.

***** ,The reason for the references of Church was only to inform you of Aretha's rich musical history.
The history of The Black Church training mostly all of the SOUL SINGERS how to sing is well known and documented in the Musical community and Industry. So that means that you are either a kid who really knows nothing about music at all or someone not of this Planet. Lol...
And I will go with you being a kid. Because when I referenced two of the GREATEST SINGERS IN recorded history, you had no comment , which tells me that you know nothing about music at all.
You probably have heard of Aretha and that is why you checked out some of her music because she was always referred to as THE QUEEN OF SOUL.
You see Sweets, your lack of knowledge about Tree Top Tall Legends like, Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughn tells a lot about your understanding of music.
And why should we who are of Colour/Black not know that in our Race we have very talented Singers and Musicians who out shines the majority .That is not RACIST it is FACTUAL.
When it comes to Music or anything with a musical note People already know that the Dark Tribes , especially the so called African Americans are super talented in that area.
That is one fact that exist.
Look at Stevie Wonder he is a Blind Man who co-wrote this song , and who also plays piano and has won back to back Grammy Awards in his Musical career. Can you tell me of any other Blind Men who has accomplished such success.
He also plays multiple musical instruments.
We have another Blind Man of Colour/Black by the name of Ray Charles who is in a similar category as Stevie Wonder , Multiple Grammy Awards and plays piano and has written numerous #1 selling songs in his long running career.
Can you name any other Blind people period who has accomplished such task as these Men that I have just mentioned. If they exist please let me know.
It's not being Racist kiddo, it's being FACTUAL.....Shalom

This was the last song I played for my partner whilst he lay dying in his hospital bed. He loved Aretha Franklin, and we went to see the documentary about her a few months before. He cried during it, he found her voice so powerful. I was hopeful that music might bring him back to me, but it did not. This song is so heartbreaking for me, it is so bittersweet. Such a beautiful, melancholy sound. I miss you bubby. You can't come back to me, but some day I will see you again. I love you Daniel.

This song has always given me strength and hope when I needed it, and from your words, I think that it also did for the both of you. I'm sorry that your buddy had to depart this earth; be strong and of good courage.

The musical arrangement in this song is CRAZY. They went off on the flute and drums

@loisbeyer5336

Ms Franklin had the creme de le creme of musicians in this session, and intro piano was herself, Stevie played the piano intro exactly the same. The strings , the flutes, the backup singers. All in his HEAD. Stevie produced this. MUSICAL ROYALTY ❤ 3:22
