Ooh Baby Baby
Aretha Franklin & Smokey Robinson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Ooh la, la, la, la.
I did you wrong, my heart went out to play
And in the game I lost you, what a price to pay!
I'm cryin', ooh baby baby ooh baby baby

Mistakes I know I've made a few,
But I'm only human; you've made mistakes too!
I'm cryin', ooh baby baby ooh baby baby

Ooh baby baby
Ooh baby baby I'm just about at the end of my rope.
But I can't stop tryin', I can't give up hope
'cause I feel someday I'll hold you near,
Whisper I still love you
Until that day is here ooh I'm cryin'.

Ooh baby baby ooh baby baby

That moment when she sings “what a price…”. So perfect. The tone, the control, the emotion, the beauty, the phrasing. Aretha was simply beyond!

That’s exactly what I thought hearing her on that part. She was truly a master

Yep ive watched this video for years now, huge smokey fan, had never heard aretha but man the dictation and the crispness in which she delivered some of the words put me off at first compared to smokeys more floaty whispery style but eventually it hit me how she intended it to and ever since i felt she complimented smokey while also contrasting him perfectly

Just in Aretha's phrasing of a word she'd be singing would bring out more flavor and scrumptious morsels of the song. She was phenomenal! Also, she played the piano by ear - self taught - no classical training, whatsoever! She was so good at her craft that she should be studied in music courses all over the world. Just a natural God-given talent! Detroit will miss you...Our Dearest Sister!🩷🌷🩷

The vulnerability in her voice when she sings, “I’m crying...” is so beautiful. 😪❤️
