The band was formed by Christian Olde Wolbers and Raymond Herrera (formerly of Fear Factory) who had recorded a demo for a new band. They sent the demo to Threat Signal vocalist Jon Howard and Arkaea was spawned. They tried to obtain Sam Rivers of Limp Bizkit for bassist, who was all for it but then decided to back down due to location. Ryan Martinie of Mudvayne then offered his services for the album but it was felt it would be too difficult for another bassist to replicate his unique basslines live as he could not tour due to Mudvayne commitments. After some time spent searching for the perfect bassist, another Threat Signal member, Pat Kavanagh, was finally chosen.
Their debut entitled Years in the Darkness was set to be released on March 3, then March 10 but was not released until July 14, 2009, selling roughly 980 units in its first week. Half of the songs that appear on the album were originally intended to be for a possible new Fear Factory album. In addition to a 5 minute long sampler the band posted the opening track "Locust" on their Myspace.

Away From the Sun
Arkaea Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
so far away from everyone.
Why must we fight to all survive?
Why must we cry to feel alive?
I've fallen away from the world,
so far away I cant be cured.
Why must we fight to all survive?
Why must we cry to feel alive?
Why must we fight to all survive?
Why must we cry to feel alive?
The lyrics to Arkaea's "Away From the Sun" speak to feelings of isolation and despair. The singer feels as though they have fallen away from the rest of the world and are no longer able to connect with others. The image of being away from the sun suggests a sense of darkness and coldness, as the sun is often associated with warmth and light. The repetition of the lines "Why must we fight to all survive? Why must we cry to feel alive?" adds to the sense of hopelessness, as the singer questions the need for such struggle in life.
The lyrics also touch on the idea that crying can be cathartic and help us feel more alive. The line "Why must we cry to feel alive?" suggests that pain and emotions are an essential part of the human experience, and that allowing ourselves to feel them fully is necessary for our wellbeing. Overall, the lyrics to "Away From the Sun" convey a sense of deep sadness and confusion, as the singer struggles to understand the nature of existence and the hardships that come with it.
