Help!
Arthur Wilkinson & His Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You left one yesterday
You took my heart away
And now I dread each newborn day
Can I help it?
Can I help it?
Along each thorough fair
While people stop and stare
I talk to you but you're not there
Can I help it, sweetheart?
I try to sleep
My dreams are haunted
By a million stars that pry
How can I sleep?
Your eyes look just that way
The day we said goodbye...

I tried forgetting you
I tried to hurt you too

But now I find I still love you
Can I help it, sweetheart?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Arthur Wilkinson & His Orchestra's song, "Help!", delve into the deep emotions and internal struggles of heartbreak and longing for a lost love. The opening lines "You left one yesterday, You took my heart away, And now I dread each newborn day" convey a sense of sudden loss and despair. The singer is reeling from the departure of their significant other and each new day feels burdensome and painful. The repetition of the question "Can I help it?" reflects the helplessness and confusion felt in the wake of a breakup, questioning whether they have any control over their emotions and the situation.

The following lines "Along each thorough fair, While people stop and stare, I talk to you but you're not there" depict a sense of loneliness and longing. The singer seems to find solace in speaking to their absent lover, despite knowing they are not present. The public setting described with "people stop and stare" adds a layer of vulnerability and isolation to the situation. The use of endearments like "sweetheart" throughout the song reflects the personal and intimate nature of the relationship being mourned.

The lyrics further explore the impact of the breakup on the singer's mental state and inner thoughts. The lines "I try to sleep, My dreams are haunted, By a million stars that pry, How can I sleep?" reveal the struggle to find peace and rest amidst the overwhelming emotions. The imagery of "a million stars that pry" suggests intrusive thoughts and memories that disrupt the singer's attempts to move on. The mention of how "Your eyes look just that way, The day we said goodbye..." highlights the lingering presence of the lost love in the singer's mind, unable to escape the memories of happier times.

In the final verse, the singer confesses their internal conflict and unresolved feelings towards their former lover. Despite trying to forget and even hurt them as a coping mechanism, they ultimately admit "But now I find I still love you." This admission of enduring love amidst the pain and attempts to move on encapsulates the complexities of emotions following a breakup. The recurring question "Can I help it, sweetheart?" echoes throughout the song, reflecting the singer's struggle to reconcile their feelings and move forward, torn between heartache and lingering love. Overall, the lyrics of "Help!" capture the raw and poignant journey of heartbreak, longing, and the internal battle to come to terms with lost love.

It works! This could be a real ballet, if someone hasn't already done it.

Have you uploaded part 2?

@billhardy7870

Too bad it skips at 2:45 from She Loves You to Help as though someone bumped the record player! :-(

@areacerrado8929

Yes, indeed : I always thought - right from my Year 12 'A' Level Music studies - that the She Loves You / Danse des Mirlitons was the best track [perhaps shared with the Danse Arabe / She Loves You].
I still have the EP from back then in 1965 ... :-)
