Oh Lady Be Good
Artie Shaw Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Listen to my tale of woe,
It's terribly sad but true,
All dressed up, no place to go
Each evening I'm awfully blue.

I must win some handsome guy
Can't go on like this,
I could blossom out I know,
With somebody just like you. So

Oh, sweet and lovely lady, be good
Oh, lady, be good to me
I am so awfully misunderstood
So lady, be good to me
Oh, please have some pity
I'm all-alone in this big city
I tell you I'm just a lonesome babe in the wood,
So lady be good to me.

Oh, please have some pity
I'm all alone in this big city
I tell you I'm just a lonesome babe in the wood,

So lady be good to me.
Oh lady be good to me.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Oh Lady Be Good" by Artie Shaw tell the tale of a woman who is looking for love and companionship in a big city, but is unable to find it. She is all dressed up with nowhere to go, feeling blue each evening. She longs to find a handsome man who can accompany her and make her feel loved. She is misunderstood and alone in the big city, hence the plea for the lady to be good to her.

The lyrics convey a sense of desperation and the longing for human contact, which is quite relatable. The woman is looking for someone who can accept her for who she is, and make her life better. The use of imagery such as "blossoming out" with somebody just like you" adds to the romantic nature of the song. The plea to be good to her is a request for understanding and compassion towards her loneliness. The last line of the song reiterates the woman's plea for companionship, and the vulnerability she feels as a "lonesome babe in the wood."

the mind boggling thing is Buddy Rich didn't miss a beat for almost another 50 years. when he passed he didn't leave one drop of potential on the table.

@jazzcornertv

I strongly agree. These musicians left nothing for the next generations of musicians to create and be original with.

This song....would not be the same. Without buddy...

Swings like mad!

@josephfollo7530

The best band in the country in 1938-1939. Could do it all.

Take em for a walk Artie

@alanosterman7130

This burns ! One of the main reasons I bought Ken Burns Jazz set. The sheer joy the players show playing this. Their in seventh heaven. Swing was something special. It transcended jazz.

@nataliep.9047

But you could play ANY song at this tempo and get the same result. Why not just listen to some rock band?

@alanosterman7130

@@nataliep.9047 I've got lots of Hendrix, Cream, Zeppelin, you name it. But, variety is the spice of life. Don't live life with blinders on. Expand !
