All The Things You Are
Artie Shaw and His Orchestra With Helen Forrest Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You are the promised kiss of springtime
That makes the lonely winter seem long
You are the breathless hush of evening
That trembles on the brink of a lovely song
You are the angel glow that lights the stars
The dearest thing I know are what you are
Someday my happy arms will hold you
And some day I'll know that moment divine
When all the things you are, are mine

Overall Meaning

These lyrics written by Oscar Hammerstein II and composed by Jerome Kern, express a deep and passionate love felt by the singer towards their beloved. The lyrics are poetic and artistic in their representation of their love. The singer compares their lover to the promise of spring, a time of rebirth and renewal after the harsh winter. Their lover's presence in their life alleviates their loneliness and transforms their perception of time. This transformation is expressed through the line "That makes the lonely winter seem long," implying that their lover's presence makes time slow down and they are able to savor each moment with them.

In the second stanza, the singer once again romanticizes their lover's effect on their life. The silence of the evening is made more precious by their lover's presence, causing the moment to tremble on the verge of a lovely song. This metaphorical image depicts the singer's lover as being able to bring beauty and music into even the most mundane moments. Further, the lover is compared to an angelic light that brightens up the sky and the stars. The singer ends the song with a longing for the future when they will finally be able to hold their lover in their arms and possess all the wonderful qualities that their lover embodies.

One of the greatest songs ever written. Music by Jerome Kern and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. This is the best rendition of this song. It doesn't get any better than Artie Shaw and Helen Forrest. It's a pity this stuff isn't around any more. Helen Forrest was probably the best band singer in that era. Thanks for posting.

Helen Forrest is a forgotten goddess. She was a great musician and interpreter of lyrics. This song makes me cry every time.

If for no other reason or song -- because of this song, Artie Shaw and this band, and Helen's superb interpretation and delivery here -- she will never be forgotten. Pretty awesome!

In addition to Artie Shaw and the band, I love Helen Forrest's vocals. Her voice lent itself perfectly to the Big Band Era. It was perfectly pitched, nuanced, and never forced. It was also very pleasant to listen to.
