Arve studied at University of Trondheim, Department of Music, and has since 1989 worked as a freelance musician. He has worked with a wide selection of musicians, like Jon Balke, Anders Jormin, Edward Vesala, Jon Christensen, Marilyn Mazur, Marilyn Crispell, Nils Petter Molvær, Misha Alperin, Arkady Shilkloper, Marc Ducret, Ketil Bjørnstad, David Sylvian, Steve Jansen and Tore Brunborg.

The lyrics to Arve Henriksen's song "Balladen om briggen 'Blue Bird' av Hull" tell the story of a decaying brig named Blue Bird from Hull. The ship stands with broken masts over the soot in a snowstorm with a damaged rig, on Christmas Eve in 1872. The Swedish sailor at the helm, Karl Stranne, is commanded by the captain to release the ropes and set the ship free. Despite the blinding snow and strong winds, Karl Stranne, from Smögen, takes the helm of the doomed Blue Bird.
As the ship struggles against the storm, it receives a signal from the Hållö lighthouse. Despite the storm's fury and the ship's near-sightedness, the ship finds shelter in the lee, close to the village of Smögen, where Karl Stranne's mother resides. Karl receives a letter from his mother in Middlesbrough, England and wonders if she will survive. The captain realizes that they are in dire straits and orders the crew to prepare to abandon ship. However, as they lower the boats, the ship does not ride the waves as expected. Instead, it receives a pair of deadly blows that destroy the already damaged ship.
Karl Stranne, believing that his father has come to their aid, cries out: "Boat in the lee! It's my father, it's us!" But there is no rescue. The elder Stranne, a viking and an eagle on this Christmas Eve in 1872, drinks his purified spirits and decides to share it with the shipwrecked men. He asks the name of the ship, and when they respond with "Blue Bird, Captain, the brig Blue Bird from Hull," he smashes the tenth glass in anger. He reveals that his son is on the ship and begs the captain to spare his mother the news of the tragedy, not mentioning the name of the doomed Blue Bird. As the captain rises, pale and worn, he trembles as he orders Karl to be secured and forgotten on board.
This tragic ballad tells the story of a ship caught in a storm, highlighting themes of bravery, sacrifice, and the strength of the human spirit in the face of disaster.
