This song has a backstory. In 1950s and 1960s when our infrastructure was worse than today, everytime there were floods in rural areas of Bihar, it took weeks for all the water to get clear. In such situations, those girls who were married in far-off villages used lost their contacts with their families for weeks. And so, the families used to call their daughters back home before the monsoon to stay with them for some time. And this song is from the point of view of a married woman who wants to tell her father to send her brother to take her home.
Shailendra thought about this song when he was in collaboration with Phanishwarnath 'Renu', when they were working on the film adaptation of 'Maare Gaye Gulfaam' which was adapted into the 1966 movie 'Teesri Kasam'. Renu told him about all the 'flood' situation and Shailendra decided to write a song about it. And, to write a nice song, you first need to feel the subject matter. And he decided to stay in Bihar to have the essence of the place. And the place he chose was my hometown, Muzaffarpur. Shailendra wrote a great song in my hometown.

The warmth between the family members is not at the level it used to be in those days...anyways jahan kahin bhi rishton me pragadhta bani huie hai woh log is geet se relate kar saktey hain....it's a beautiful song...the credit goes to the entire team, shailendraji, sachin da, ashaji and bimal da have done a marvelous job...

Read somewhere that Asha Bhosle broke down into tears during the recording of this song. She had eloped with Mr. Bhosle and was estranged from the Mangeshkar family. The lyrics of this song evoked such emotions that she sobbed and then picked herself up for the song in one take . The magic is undeniable. We can connect with the song even after seven decades.

Actually it took several takes, not one. Sachin Dev Burman was unhappy with Asha Bhosle's rendition, saying that she was not getting the right emotion. Finally, frustrated, he said to her angrily: "don't you have a brother?" (tumhaaraa bhaaii nahii.n hai, kyaa?). Asha used to be very close to Hridaynath, as she was the one who took care of him when he was little. The thought of her estranged brother made her break down in tears at Sachin da's question, and he immediately recorded another take where he was finally satisfied.

Ashaji has reportedly cried as she was not allowed to meet her maternal family by her first in laws. She sang whatever sang came to her only to feed her in laws family but they would beat her and not allow her home is she come home late doubting her. Then she found happiness with OP but he too became like the first one and they married secretly too. She atlast found solace with genuine and kind soul RD but fate took him soon when they were supposed to finally stay together forever in Calcutta after retirement.

मैं आज तक नहीं समझ पाया, कि इस गीत को सुनते, गाते, गुनगुनाते समय दिल क्यूँ भर आता है.....
छोटा सा था तो अक्सर अम्मां को ये गीत गुनगुनाते गाते सुनता था, फिर तीन बड़ी बहनें......
पर जो भी है, ये गीत सबसे ज्यादा दुरूह है, शायद ही इसे आसानी से गाया जा सके.....कठिन, अति कठिन.....
लय पकड़ो तो भाव गला अवरुद्ध कर देते हैं और भाव पकड़ो तो सुर गला रुंधा देते हैं
