Three Windsor high school classmates consisting of Gray, Preney, and an unnamed vocalist sought out to start a band. They found their drummer in Paul Doman and created the band Knematic. After two separate incidents forced Gray and the former vocalist to leave the band, the band was left with a void. Ashes of Soma found their bassist in between the incidents, and Gray later happily rejoined the band as the new vocalist. After a couple of years of developing their sound, they recorded their first record, Exit 674. The first single released was "Emancipate". The band is working with record producer David Bendeth (known for his work with Breaking Benjamin and Killswitch Engage) as they record their second album.
They have toured in the US and Canada with Candlebox, Default, Hinder, and Theory of a Deadman. They have also toured with Social Code, Idle Sons, Evans Blue and Thornley.
The band's influences include Tool, Sevendust, Disturbed, Finger Eleven, and I Mother Earth.
In December 2008 the band released their third single "Bedroom Walls" and it received heavy air play on Canadian rock stations as well as WRIF (Detroit) and 89X (Windsor/Detroit) in Michigan. The Ashes of Soma self-titled record was released in 2010 and featured a few re-recorded versions of songs found Exit 674.
The band premiered their fourth single "Meteor" on September 8, 2013 on the station 89X. Their EP The Singularity was released on October 4, 2013 and will be followed with a tour.
Somebody Else
Ashes of Soma Lyrics

Kept me out tonight
I've been so waiting for this
And contradictions all I have
Or is it you
I've lost all confidence
And how can you tell me
I'm always second best
To somebody else
And I am on
The train that's passing you by
See you running away
With your hand in mine
Is there anything that I can say
To change your mind
That you're holding in
Let you down in some way
Through this
Well I'm only one man
And how can you tell me
The way I should live my life
I'm always second best
To somebody else
And I am on
The train that's passing you by
See you running away
With your hand in mine
And I am on
The train that's passing you by
See you running away
With your hand in mine
And how can you tell me
The way I should live my life
I'm always second best
To somebody else
And I am on
The train that's passing you by
See you running away
With your hand in mine
And I am on
The train that's passing you by
See you running away
The lyrics of "Somebody Else" by Ashes of Soma seem to express the singer's feeling of being caught in a situation where they are constantly being compared to someone else. The conversation with another person seems to have kept the singer out tonight as they express their excitement for it, but it's also causing them some contradictions and a loss of confidence. The other person seems to be telling the singer how to live their life, and the singer feels like they are always second best to "somebody else".
The chorus of the song is where the meaning seems to come together, and the imagery of a train passing by takes over. The singer says they are on the train that's passing the other person by, but they see the other person running away with their hand in the singer's. This seems to show that even with the singer's efforts to move on from the comparisons and the judgement of the other person, they still want to be with them. The line "Is there anything I can say to change your mind" is a sort of plea to the other person to see the singer as an individual and not just someone to be compared to.
Overall, the lyrics of "Somebody Else" seem to be about the struggle of being in a relationship or dealing with someone who constantly puts you down or compares you to others. It's a common feeling that many people can relate to, and the train imagery adds a sense of motion and progress that suggest the singer will continue moving forward with or without the other person's approval.
