Alpha, their second album, also had a couple of hits ("Don't Cry" and "The Smile Has Left Your Eyes") but its follow-up, Astra, was a flop. The group disbanded in 1985, only to reunite in 1990 without John Wetton; John Payne took his place. After churning out a couple of new songs for a greatest-hits collection, the band hit the road, including two sold-out dates in front of 20,000 fans in Moscow. Thereafter, they toured sporadically and released Aqua (1992), Aria (1994), Arena (1996), Aura (2001), and Silent Nation (2004). The band's lineup reverted to its original form featuring Wetton, Palmer, Howe, and Downes for Phoenix (2008) and Omega (2010). In 2012, the original Asia lineup returned with the studio album XXX, featuring the single "Face on the Bridge." The following year, Howe announced his amicable departure from the group to pursue other projects, and in 2014 Asia released the album Gravitas, featuring new guitarist Sam Coulson. In January 2017, a month and a half before the scheduled beginning of an extensive U.S. tour by the band, John Wetton died from colon cancer at the age of 67.
Biography by Stephen Thomas Erlewine
There is another band with the same name:
2) Asia was an excellent hard rock band with a drive for epic, pomp-filled rock tunes. The band was from Rapid City, South Dakota and should not be confused with the famous U.K. one, which sadly outshone them and ended up rendering the U.S. group highly obscure despite the U.S. one's critical support. Going for a loose instrumental energy similar to Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin, their eventual line-up was made up of Michael English (vocals, bass, percussion), Larry Galbraith (vocals, guitars, mandolin), Mike Coates (guitars, mandolin, mellotron, piano, harpsichord, vocals), and Doug Johnson (percussion). They released two albums: 'Asia' (1979) and 'Armed to the Teeth' (1980).
The Sun
Asia Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
From the horizon to infinity
Static forces down the line
Connecting voices talking rhymes
Can't decode nor can define
The signal's perfect indicates a sign
Guiding light
Take the eye
Go skimming
Across the sky
As far as the eye could see
Communications were all down
Connecting voices in the air
New formations moving sound
Then came what I could not explain
I felt a hand turned around and saw a face
The lyrics of Asia's song "Midnight Sun" describe a mysterious and captivating phenomenon in the sky that is witnessed by the singer. The first two lines set the scene, painting a picture of vastness and infinity. The use of the words "static forces" and "connecting voices" suggest a sense of mystery, as if we are observing some kind of cosmic communication. The line "Can't decode nor can define" reflects the singer's frustration at not being able to fully understand what they are witnessing, yet they are still able to recognise it as a significant event.
The chorus brings in the idea of the "Midnight Sun" as a guiding light, and the suggestion that the strange phenomenon is leading the observer on a journey or adventure. The use of the phrase "skimming across the sky" gives a sense of movement and excitement, as if the singer is being pulled along by this strange force.
The second verse adds to the mystery, as the singer describes how all communication appears to have been lost, yet "connecting voices" are still heard in the air, suggesting that something is still happening. The final line adds a further twist, as the singer sees a face, hinting at the possibility of an encounter with something or someone otherworldly.
Overall, the lyrics of "Midnight Sun" use vivid imagery to create a sense of wonder and intrigue, and leave the listener with a sense of mystery and the desire to explore what lies beyond.

LYRICS: 🎶🎶
I never meant to be so bad to you
One thing I said that I would never do
A look from you and I would fall from grace
And that would wipe the smile right from my face
Do you remember when we used to dance
And incidents arose from circumstance
One thing led to another, we were young
And we would scream together songs unsung
It was the heat of the moment
Telling me what my heart meant
The heat of the moment showed in your eyes
And now you find yourself in '82
The disco hot spots hold no charm for you
You can concern yourself with bigger things
You catch a pearl and ride the dragon's wings
'Cause it's the heat of the moment
The heat of the moment
The heat of the moment showed in your eyes
And when your looks are gone and you're alone
How many nights you sit beside the phone
What were the things you wanted for yourself
Teenage ambitions you remember well
It was the heat of the moment
Telling me what your heart meant
The heat of the moment showed in your eyes
It was the heat of the moment
The heat of the moment
The heat of the moment showed in your eyes
Heat of the moment
Heat of the moment
Heat of the moment...
