He said that he and I were through
I started out drinking for pastime
Driving nails in my coffin over you
I'm just driving nails in my coffin
Every time I drink a bottle of booze
I'm just driving nails in my coffin
Ever since the day that we parted
I've been so sad and so blue
I'm always thinking of you, love
And I just can't quit drinking that old booze
I'm just driving nails in my coffin
Every time I drink a bottle of booze
I'm just driving nails in my coffin
Driving those nails over you
You turned me down, you don't want me
There's nothing now I can lose
I'm just driving those nails in my coffin
And worrying, my darling, over you
I'm just driving nails in my coffin
Every time I drink a bottle of booze
I'm just driving nails in my coffin
Driving those nails over you
I'm just driving nails in my coffin
Every time I drink a bottle of booze
I'm just driving nails in my coffin
Driving those nails over you
Yes, I'm driving those nails over you
The song In My Dreams by Asleep At The Wheel is a classic country song that speaks of heartbreak, loss, and coping mechanisms. The song tells a story of a man who has lost his sweetheart, and he can't seem to get over her. The man starts drinking as a pastime, but the more he drinks, the more it reminds him of his lost love. The lyrics, "I'm just driving nails in my coffin, every time I drink a bottle of booze, driving those nails over you," create an image of the man feeling like he's slowly killing himself with his drinking, all while he dwells on thoughts of his lost love.
The lyrics also express the idea that the man is trying to cope with his loss by numbing his pain with alcohol. He knows his drinking is driving him further into despair, but he can't help himself. He's so sad and lonely that the alcohol provides a brief respite from his pain. As the song progresses, it becomes clear that the man is consumed by his thoughts of his lost love, and he's willing to do anything to ease the pain, even if it ultimately destroys him.
Overall, the song is a devastatingly honest portrayal of the ways in which heartbreak can consume a person's life. It shows how people can become lost in their emotions and turn to self-destructive behavior to numb the pain. The lyrics are simple, but they paint a powerful picture of loss and desperation.
