In My Head
Asobi Seksu Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I can see that it's been building
But I don't seem to know
How many hours I've been sleeping
In my head
In my head
In my head
I can't recall
How many hours I've spent dreaming
But I look at the mirror
I can see that it's been raining
In my head
In my head
In my head
In my head
The lyrics to Asobi Seksu's song In My Head suggest the juxtaposition of the reality and perception of the world within an individual's mind. The opening lines describe the view from the window and how something has been building outside, but the person is too caught up in their thoughts to pay attention. This indicates a detachment from reality and a preoccupation with their own mindscape. The repetition of "In my head" further emphasizes this focus on the internal world. The second stanza continues this theme, with the singer looking at their reflection and realizing it's been raining, indicating that they have been lost in thought for an extended period of time. The use of the mirror as a device shows how the person is not only detached from the world outside but also from themselves. They are ambiguous about how much time they have spent dreaming, suggesting that they may have spent more time in a fantasy than in the real world.
In essence, the song paints a picture of someone who is overwhelmed by their thoughts, struggling to reconcile their internal world with external reality. The use of the chorus and simple melody reflects the cyclical and unrelenting nature of intrusive thoughts that can often feel overpowering.

Of how long I've been slumbering
In my head
Yet, in my imagination

I can't recall
I cannot fondly remember
How many hours I've spent dreaming
The length of time I've spent lost in reverie eludes me
But I look at the mirror
Although, when I glance at my reflection
I can see that it's been raining
I perceive that precipitation has occurred
In my head
Yet, still within my mind's eye
In my head

In my head
Within my psyche
In my head
Deep in my imagination
