The Girl from Ipanema
Astrud Gilberto JoÃo Gilberto and Stan Getz Lyrics

Olha que coisa mais linda,
Mais cheia de graça
É ela menina
Que vem que passa
Num doce balanço
Caminho do mar

Moça do corpo dourado
Do sol de Ipanema
O seu balançado
É mais que um poema
É a coisa mais linda
Que eu já vi passar

Ah, porque estou tão sozinho
Ah, porque tudo e tão triste
Ah, a beleza que existe
A beleza que não é só minha
Que também passa sozinha

Ah, se ela soubesse
Que quando ela passa
O mundo sorrindo
Se enche de graça
E fica mais lindo
Por causa do amor

Tall and tan and young and lovely
The girl from Ipanema goes walking
And when she passes
Each one she passes goes, aaaaaah

When she walks, she's like a samba
That swings so cool and sways so gently
That when she passes
Each one she passes goes, aaaaaah

Ooh, but he watches so sadly
How can he tell her he loves her
Yes, he would give his heart gladly
But each day, when she walks to the sea
She looks straight ahead, not at him

Tall, and tan, and young, and lovely
The girl from Ipanema goes walking
And when she passes
He smiles, but she doesn't see

Ooh, but he sees her so sadly
How can he tell her he loves her
Yes, he would give his heart gladly
But each day, when she walks to the sea
She looks straight ahead, not at him

Tall, and tan, and young, and lovely
The girl from Ipanema goes walking

And when she passes
He smiles, but she doesn't see

Overall Meaning

"The Girl from Ipanema" is a classic bossa nova song that tells the story of a beautiful girl from Ipanema, a beach neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The song was written by songwriter Antonio Carlos Jobim and lyricist Vinicius de Moraes. The song was famously performed by Astrud Gilberto, Joao Gilberto, and Stan Getz and was released in 1964.

The lyrics describe the beauty and grace of the girl from Ipanema as she walks towards the sea. The song's opening lines, "Olha que coisa mais linda, mais cheia de graça" (Look what a beautiful thing, so full of grace), set the tone for the description of the girl's body and movement. The song's narrator admires her from afar, watching as she passes by him, accompanied by a gentle samba rhythm.

The second half of the song takes a more melancholic turn, as the singer laments his unrequited love for the girl from Ipanema. He watches her with longing as she walks to the sea, but she is oblivious to his feelings. The song ends on a bittersweet note, with the singer still admiring the girl's beauty but resigned to the fact that he will never have her.

My 17 year old daughter was just humming this amazingly beautiful tune. I looked at her and asked if she knew the song. She did not. Well, she does now! And we are dancing around our kitchen listening together. What a wonderful bonding moment. Peace and Love be with us all...
