Songwriters Ned and Vedantha originally met whilst studying at Cambridge. After countless nights spent honing their vocal harmonies and intricate guitar playing, they moved to London where they met Jordan, a classical violist, studying at the Royal Academy of Music. The three whiled away an afternoon on London’s Southbank, talking about their favourite musicians; the likes of Bon Iver and Kings of Convenience. They formed as August and After, and after many sold-out London shows, support slots for artists such as Ghostpoet and Scott Matthews, a Ronnie Scott’s residency and several European tours, they travelled to Paris to record their debut EP, Cascades, with French producer Jonathan Lefèvre-Reich (We Were Evergreen).
With support from the likes of BBC 6 Music, Kerrang! Radio and a stream of online press, and Wolves featured on Spotify UK’s official Your Coffee Break playlist garnering over 200k plays in a matter of weeks, the trio will head to the studio fresh from a set at this year’s Secret Garden Party, to start recording two follow-up singles.

August and After Lyrics

And this is how the story ends
(Well I'll write it for you)
When we have been here for so many years
And this is how it ends
(And this is how the story ends)
When the storm meets the eye
I will watch it
I will wait it out with you
It always rains like hell tonight
And this night moon and this night sky, it burns tonight
(Don't want a getaway)
And when you leave and when I go, well we'll know
I don't wanna know
Chorus
Bridge
Chorus x 2
The lyrics of August and After's song "Getaway" depict the ending of a long and significant chapter in someone's life. The opening lines suggest that this place they are in will be their final destination, implying that they are saying goodbye to a familiar and meaningful location. The repetition of "this is how the story ends" emphasizes that this moment signifies the closing of a significant chapter in their lives.
The following lines introduce the metaphor of a storm meeting the eye, which symbolizes a moment of intense confrontation or realization. In the face of this storm, the singer expresses their willingness to endure and face it together with the person they are addressing. This can be interpreted as a commitment to standing by each other during difficult times and not shying away from facing challenges head-on.
The mention of rain and a burning moon and sky adds to the atmosphere of intensity and turmoil. The line "I don't wanna know" suggests a reluctance to acknowledge the impending departure or separation from the other person. It implies a desire to avoid the painful reality of their impending separation and perhaps to remain in a state of blissful ignorance.
The chorus then acts as a reaffirmation of the desire to escape or run away from this situation. It could represent a longing for a fresh start or a new beginning, away from the emotional weight and difficult circumstances they find themselves in. However, the bridge section is not mentioned, so its interpretation is left open to individual listener interpretation. The final repetition of the chorus emphasizes the yearning for escape and hints at a desire for resolution or closure.
