Twenty Years

Twenty years in my car
Down a road that's leading me nowhere
Yeah we drive through the farmland
No one knows where we're from
Could I kiss you and make you a queen?
Or something in between
The place where I am free?
Cause in my mind I need it
But you're nowhere near to me
Move to New York City
Take your woman by the hand
Leave her there with your things on the doorstep
And there's no way around it
Could this be our last dance?
So fall asleep with the t.v. darling
I'll be back again
Do you want to see it
The place where I am free?
Cause in my mind I've been there
And there's no one here but me
In the morning it'll find you
Let the light shine away
Down a road that's leading me nowhere
And there's no way around it
Could this be our last dance?
Just fall asleep with the t.v. darling
I'll be back again
I'll be back again
The Augustana song "Twenty Years" is a reflection on two decades of the singer's life, during which time he has been running from something, although he does not know what that is. He has spent the last twenty years travelling in his car, down a road that goes nowhere, with nobody knowing where he's from, and the song suggests that he is alone in his journey, longing for someone to join him. He tells the listener that he wants them to see the place where he is free and he imagines that he is there in his mind even though the person he is speaking to is not actually with him.
The song then goes on to talk about moving to New York City and leaving his woman behind with his things on the doorstep, suggesting that this could be their last dance. The idea of dancing here refers to their relationship, and he is essentially saying that he is leaving her, and he doesn't know if they will ever be together again. The song is ultimately about the nostalgia and longing of growing older, moving on, and feeling trapped in time. The singer wants to go to the place where he is free, but he is not there yet, and he doesn't know if he will ever find it.
