Alfie
Austin Powers Goldmember Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Finjo ser invisível
Pra não ter que te encarar
Afogo na piscina
Pra você me salvar

Tropeço na escada pra você me pegar
Crio mil feitiços pra tentar te conquistar
Eu só quero brincar com você
Eu só quero brincar com você

Tenho todos que quero
Mas perco o ar quando te vejo
Saio com seus vizinhos
Só pra você me notar

Tropeço na escada pra você me pegar
Crio mil feitiços pra tentar te conquistar

Eu só quero brincar com você
Eu só quero brincar com você
Eu só quero, quero brincar com você
Eu só quero brincar com você

Eu só quero brincar com você
Eu só quero brincar com você
Eu só quero, quero brincar com você
Eu só quero brincar com você

Não me despreze
Eu sou pior que você

Não tenha medo
Eu só quero brincar

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Alfie" by Austin Powers Goldmember express the longing and infatuation of the singer towards an elusive love interest. The singer plays the role of an invisible, drowning, and stumbling lover who tries to catch the attention of the person they desire. They resort to different tactics, such as creating spells and hanging out with their neighbors to get noticed. Despite having everything else they want, they cannot stop the feeling of losing their breath every time they see this person. The singer acknowledges their inferiority but assures their love interest that they only want to play and have fun with them.

The song captures the theme of unrequited love, which many people can relate to. The singer, in this case, puts on a facade of being invisible to avoid confronting their love interest. The line, "Afogo na piscina pra você me salvar" (I drown in the pool for you to save me) is a metaphor that reflects the singer's hope that their love interest will notice them and come to their rescue. The trope of stumbling on the stairs is an indication of their vulnerability and reliance on the love interest. The singer's plea, "Não me despreze, eu sou pior que você" (Don't despise me, I'm worse than you) and the assurance that they only want to have fun, suggests that they are not taking themselves too seriously, even in the midst of their infatuation.

Everyone asking why this was deleted, here’s why:

In test screenings, people were very moved by this scene. So much so, that they didn’t laugh for the rest of the film. This scene was too emotional to keep in the final cut.

Samson Silvo

Stupid reason regardless. The movie really would have been so much better if they kept this.

God, this makes me cry. How good is Mike Myers that he can make a comedy so solid that it has real feeling in it? Makes me think of him playing his Scottish father in "So, I Married an Axe Murderer", the part where he teased his son for having a huge head. Anyway, Hoffs version of this song is so lovely. Great voice.

There's a lot to unpack here, particularly where Rob Lowe is involved.

@NX 2000 It’s a follow up to a deleted scene from The Spy Who Shagged Me. Past Number 2 and Present Number 2 are in a relationship. The only person Number 2 loves is himself.

I get goosebumps every time Beyonce sings that harmony with Susanna Hoffs.
