Lost in space
Avantasia Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Has fallen without a sound
Another spark
Has burned out in the cold
Another door
To barrens standing open
To tell me not to give and not to go
How could I know? how could I know?
That I'll get lost in space to roam forever
How could I know? how could I see?
Feeling like lost in space to roam forever
I'm crawling down
The doorway to the badlands
And kicking down
Are you heard: it's to the black
And all the damage
Fading in the oblivion mirror
When the demons
Are calling me, their dragging me away
How could I know?, how could I know?
That I'll get lost in space to roam forever
How could I know?, how could I see?
Feeling like lost in space to roam forever
Lost in space
Lost in time
Lost in space
Lost in Time
Lost in Space
How could I know, how could I know
How could I know, How could I know
That I'll get lost in space to roam for ever
How could I now, how could I see
Feeling like lost in space to roam forever
Forever...
"Lost In Space" is a power ballad that speaks to the theme of uncertainty and the fear of unknown. The song's opening verses establish a tone of sadness and despair as Avantasia sings about the demise of another star, symbolically referencing the loss of hope or inspiration in someone's life. The lyrics further develop this theme by drawing on the imagery of barren landscapes and open doors, leading the singer to a state of confusion and desperation. He's left wondering who is there to give him guidance and reassure him that there's a path to follow.
As the song progresses into the chorus, Avantasia paints an even bleaker picture, expressing the terror of being lost in space and time, completely disconnected from the world and condemned to wander aimlessly. The lyrics encapsulate the feeling of being trapped in one's own thoughts and fears, unable to break free or find a way out. Avantasia's soaring vocals and the song's powerful instrumentation add to the sense of urgency and desperation, driving home the idea that getting lost in space is something that could happen to anyone.

This song accomplishes something rather unusual. Being it the last song of the album, it sounds like a hero accepting his destiny as a pariah. And it's bittersweet.
Perfect.

Well, the whole concept of the trilogy (The Scarecrow, The Wicked Symphony and Angel of Babylon) is about a guy that always felt like a "scarecrow", a pariah, an outcast, suffering for an unrequited love... Someone introduces him to arts, and he finally finds some meaning to his life, but in the process he is trapped by his own demons (ie: his own mental issues and, why not, some drugs). Now that I think about it, maybe the meaning of the song is that he surrendered to them, and by doing that he was "lost in space".
Unlike the Metal Operas, which they had a story that complemented the lyrics, those albums only featured a brief prelude, and unnamed characters. The story has to be followed by analyzing the lyrics.
