God Damn
Avenged Sevenfold Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh!

Hey! Can't you see we're tripping on the wire
Walking through the candy land of our desires
Press the magic button and behold the world you crave
Where's the fun in freedom when it renders you a slave?

Pledge allegiance, no flag
God nation, goddamned
The devil dances with the scorned
And how the fire keeps us warm

Hey! It goes beyond big brother in the sky
Beyond the threat of martial law no Horus eye
No one came to cuff you they just handed you the chains
Blind follows the blind and now the one-eyed man is king

Pledge allegiance, no flag
God nation, goddamned
The devil dances with the scorned
And how the fire keeps us warm

Tunnel vision, no man
Damnation, god damn
Can't see the forest for the trees
Can't heal the wound before we bleed

No form of payment, no pot of gold will satisfy the debt of what he's owed
Spilling from the houses in a trance the children lined up on the road
Cursing at the piper as he lured your kids away
And led them to the river for what was their final day
No need for convincing on his pipe he played a song to fool them all
Fooled them all

Pledge allegiance, no flag
God nation, goddamned
The devil dances with the scorn
And now the fire keeps us (keeps us)

Tunnel vision, no man
Damnation, god damn

Can't see the forest for the trees
Can't heal the wound before we bleed

Overall Meaning

"The Stage" is the seventh album made by Avenged Sevenfold. The song "God Damn" is a sharp commentary on the current state of politics and society. The lyrics speak to how people are addicted to their desires and quick fixes, represented by a magic button that can fulfill any wish. However, this desire for freedom serves as a tool for enslavement, as pledging allegiance to a nation or government does not necessarily promote freedom. The reference to God and the devil dancing with the scorned speaks to the religious and moral confusion in society. The fire mentioned multiple times in the song represents both warmth and destruction, showing how these ideas can be intertwined.

The song also criticizes those who have tunnel vision, who cannot see the bigger picture and the consequences of their actions. They are damned by their choices, and their inability to consider the long-term impact of their decisions. The last verse speaks to the dangers of blindly trusting authority figures, referencing the story of the Pied Piper where children were led astray by a charismatic figure. The message is clear, don't be so easily lured and fooled by those in power.

I know it's fashionable for metalheads to hate on this band, but as someone who saw my share of gigs in the 1980s and grew up in the trash metal scene, I like this band and have profound respect for them. Their music has evolved, they are fine musicians, outstanding songwriters and deliver a bit of intelligence in their offering. I don't know WHY people hate them? Are they BRUTAL? Generally no. There are other bands for that. But what this band does is deliver outstanding heavy metal music with a nod to everything from Guns N roses to Slayer. These kids learned from some good reference points...and the songs they write are absolutely good songs. Everything from Chapter 4 to this song...an excellent band, one of the very few remaining keeping the metal flag flying among the main.

Maybe my best way to get to see my work

Battery is about Metallica's fans

I too am a Kevin W, nice

I totally agree. I have never understood that backlash they receive. If you know metal, then there is no denying that A7X is as metal as it gets. Maybe not your breed of metal, but metal know doubt. They have a little bit of everything. Great band. Most people are just posers or elitist who don’t know what they are talking about, or are just really closed minded. Look at Queensryche, I love them, but many metal head don’t. Operation Mindcrime was my childhood. (I’m on my daughters name. I’m a 33yr old male though.) lol

im actually glad that they picked him as a drummer. if you listen closely you can hear The Rev in the way he plays. and i fucking respect that. he carried jimmys legacy perfectly.

@Grimeyhoob

Nope he has his own style. He doesn’t copy the Rev at all. Brooks is a legend in his own right. The guy has played with suicidal tendencies, infectious grooves and Bad religion.

@GarrettPeirce

True. Brooks has his own style which makes him unique in a good way

@squidwardtentacles2900

he did the double ride like what the rev did
