At the surface level, Red Is The New Black by Avenged Sevenfold appears to be a song about the unrealistic expectations and pressures placed on people in the media spotlight. The first verse talks about the dilemma of having too many options and not knowing what to trust. This is followed by the chorus insisting that trust is the most important factor in this situation. The second verse continues along similar lines, painting a picture of someone as a media darling, who is now losing control and facing a break in the mold. The chorus repeats once again, with a significant addition: the sudden insight that the situation is all messed up beyond redemption.
However, the song takes on a more personal and bitter tone towards the end, with the bridge verse and concluding lines. In the bridge verse, the singer screams down a hotline, desperate to feel something, and the song ends with the repetition of the line "just to feel something".
