Special
Avenue Q [Original Broadway Cast] Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

LUCY
I can make you feel
special.
When it sucks to be you.
Let me make you feel
special.
For an hour or two.
Your life's a routine
that repeats each day.
No one cares who you are
or what you say.
And sometimes you feel
like you're nobody,
but you can feel like
somebody with me.

PRINCETON
Wow!

LUCY
Yeah, they're real.

When we're together
the earth will shake
and the stars will fall
into the sea.
So come on, baby,
let down your guard.
When your date's in
the bathroom,
I'll slip you my card.
I can tell just by looking
that you've got it hard
For me! For me!
For me! For me!
For me! For me!
I can tell just by looking

that you are especially
hard for me!

Overall Meaning

The song "Special" from Avenue Q is a duet between Lucy and Princeton. Lucy is a seductive character who offers to make Princeton feel special when he is feeling down. She promises to give him an escape from his mundane life and make him feel important, even if only for an hour or two. This song speaks to the human desire for attention and validation, especially during times of loneliness and despair.

Throughout the song, Lucy uses sexual innuendos and provocative dancing to draw Princeton in. She promises him that when they are together, the earth will shake and the stars will fall into the sea. In doing so, she suggests that she can offer something greater than the mundane routine of everyday life. Lucy also mentions that she can tell just by looking at Princeton that he is hard for her, further emphasizing the physical attraction between the two characters.

Overall, "Special" speaks to the human need for companionship and attention. The lyrics make the listener question their own desires and what lengths they would go to for a moment of feeling important and special.

@Ty Sargent I'm thinking we need some of the former cast members in cameo roles or playing newer characters (Rick has a lot of puppets that he isn't using)
Perhaps
Mary Faber-Kate Monster's mother (can't think of a name at the moment)
Christian Anderson-Craig (named after Stephanie's husband Craig Shemin)- He's Kate's older brother, she never talks about, is extremely protective of his little sister.
Sarah Stiles-Joan-A girl monster that is a parody of Zoe w/a green nose instead of a purple/pink one her closest friend is an Elmo analog named "CinderElmo" (based on the character Elmo played in the film) Sarah's take on Kate sounds more like Zoe than Prairie Dawn.
Something similar to the Two-Headed Monster
A "Big Bird" type character (except a different species of bird)
Something akin to the Whatnots/Anything Muppets (to fill out the crowd scenes)
More monsters
That's pretty much what I was thinking
However:
1. you might have to cut out some of the puppeteers
I say keep it within the NY-LA area
2. If you're using British performers use the ones that did Q on the West End.

3. Why are Bill, Kevin, and Noel playing Rick's parts? Can he not reprise his roles? Or is it that he's too old
4. The three you mentioned before, I happen to know Tau and Jayden, Darcy? Ya mean the girl from America's Got Talent?
5. Why are there so many boxes, weren't there originally 6?
6. Where's Jodi Eichelberger or Raymond Carr?
Are you saying that'll be bigger and better than "The Happytime Murders"

My friend left this laying around in his room, and his 8-year-old niece found it. She learned it, and she wouldn't stop singing it. She's older now, but she still remembers it xD

InsxneMxnd

That’s hilarious 😂

The thing people don't get is that the "student version" doesn't mean the characters are student age, it's just the maturity is toned down. There's still a lot of innuendos even in high school productions.

Crybaby Hamilton Dawson

I love how Rod is there pretending to be straight😂

Road Kill

Adriana Armstrong you type so damn loud

We all know he's a gay bb u.u

There was a recording of a performance I saw where he didn't even pretend!
He just sat there reading a book and didn't even seem to notice Lucy at all XD

Iunno, I prefer Julie's version of Lucy, but Stephanie does a good job as well. Both singers have different qualities that make their versions of Kate and Lucy shine - Julie with her amazing caberet/Disney-ish voice, and Stephanie for tuning into the puppets pretty well with her voice and making the characters really sound like Sesame Street characters (Lucy = Miss Piggy, Kate = Prairie Dawn?) Can't wait until they've made DVDs of the original Broadway and West End performances :)
