The Same Love That Made Me Laugh
B.Withers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Your love is like a a chunk of gold
Hard to gain, and hard to hold

Like a rose that's soft to touch
Love has gone, and it hurts so much

Well and Why
Must the same love that made me laugh
Make me cry?

Well now you think of love as sitting on a mountain
Think of it as being a great big rock
Won't you think before you started to roll it down
Because once you start it, you can't make it stop

I've given all I have to give
And if you don't want me
I don't want to live

Well and Why
Must the same love that made me laugh
Why you want to make me cry?
Why you want to make me cry?
Why you want to make me cry?
Why you want to make me cry?
Why you want to make me cry?

Why you want to make me lay in my pillow
Just cryin' like a weeping willow

Why you want to make me cry?
Why you want to make me cry?
Why you want to make me cry?
Why you want to make me cry?

Why you want to make me mess in my pillow
I'm just cryin' like a weeping willow

Why you want to make me cry?

Why you want to make me cry?
Why you want to make me cry?

Overall Meaning

In "The Same Love That Made Me Laugh," Bill Withers sings about the bittersweet nature of love. He compares love to a “chunk of gold,” something that is valuable but difficult to attain and hold onto. The second verse uses the metaphor of a rose, something that is beautiful and delicate to the touch, but also has thorns that can cause pain. Withers then asks the question, “why must the same love that made me laugh, make me cry?” He is questioning why love can be so wonderful and fulfilling at one moment and then turn on him and cause him so much pain.

In the next verse, Withers compares love to a mountain or a great big rock that should be thought about carefully before pushing it down – once it starts rolling, it can’t be stopped. He then laments the fact that he has given all he has to give in the relationship, and if his love isn’t wanted, he doesn’t want to live. The final repetition of the chorus emphasizes the pain and tears that love can bring, making the singer feel as if they are crying like a weeping willow.

Overall, the song speaks to the complexity of love and how it can be both wonderful and painful at the same time. It showcases the idea that love can be a powerful force, something that can give our lives meaning and purpose, but it can also knock us down and cause us to question everything we believed about ourselves and the world around us.

Check out Robert Cray’s cover of this song on his High Rhythm album on YouTube. It is equally as good if not better.

Ryan The Iron the trick is to not slam it into a rock song. That fill, the one fill, lol...i know it like the back of my hand as a singing drummer, and I keep wanting to screw around with it and add stuff that don't go there. I think there's more trick to keep it real straight and do it very solid with the right feel. Most guys never pull it off. They never actually listen to the song. Much less write things down :)

pattern seems to be on the fill (snare:) "1 e and uh 2 e and uh" (small tom:) 3 e AND uh" (snare:) 4 e and uh." 1 is a dry (closed) hat. It's all very even. No accents, no aiming for the floor. Towards the end, he's got some 16th pops in the high hat.

If it's right, on.a similar kit, you should bury the recording, meaning they match exactly because you don't hear the drums on it at all.
