Magpie
B. I. G. Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴

Wake up in the morning to the magpie calls
Singing man what a beautiful dawn
Can you hear him while you’re sleeping there
Can you hear him wherever you’ve gone?

I see the midday moon
It's watching over you
Sometimes I think about what’s outside the sky
Try and imagine where we’re going to
I remember your eyes over the sea
The night you spoke to me
And I fell asleep that night
Knowing everything would be alright

We used to play our games on these streets
Past the vampire's house we walked
This morning the shops are full but I don’t know the people
It’s been too long since we talked

The magpie said it'll be ok (all right)
He's been watching over you
All this day (time)

And with him by your side
You can rest here on the hill

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Magpie" by B.I.G. evoke a sense of nostalgia and reflection. The song begins with the imagery of waking up to the calls of a magpie, symbolizing a new day and the beauty of life's beginnings. The singer marvels at the beauty of the dawn, inviting listeners to notice the small wonders of the world even while they are asleep or lost in their thoughts. The repeated question "Can you hear him wherever you've gone?" suggests a longing for connection and presence, even in moments of solitude or distance.

In the second verse, the lyrics shift to a more introspective tone as the singer contemplates the mysteries of the universe. The mention of the midday moon and the attempt to grasp the vastness of the sky reflect a sense of wonder and curiosity about life's journey and destination. The memory of a past moment by the sea, where reassurance was found in the gaze of another, serves as a comforting anchor amidst uncertainty and change. The act of falling asleep with the belief that everything will be alright speaks to a sense of trust and faith in the unseen forces that guide us.

The third verse delves into themes of childhood innocence and the passage of time. The reference to playing games on familiar streets and walking past the "vampire's house" invokes a sense of playful imagination and the magic of youth. However, the realization that the shops are now filled with unfamiliar faces highlights the inevitable distance that can grow between friends and the sense of alienation that can accompany adulthood. The lyrics convey a sense of loss and longing for the connection that once was, reflecting on the transient nature of relationships and the evolution of personal journeys.

The song concludes with a sense of reassurance and peace, as the magpie is portrayed as a comforting presence watching over the listener. The repetition of the phrase "It'll be okay, all right" suggests a message of hope and protection, reminding the listener that they are not alone in their struggles. The imagery of resting on a hill with the magpie by one's side evokes a sense of tranquility and companionship, offering solace in the midst of life's uncertainties. Overall, "Magpie" conveys a message of finding solace in nature, memories, and the belief that there is always a guiding presence that will lead us through the challenges and changes of life.

I am an Aussie; I have a family of magpies come round every day for a snack and a talk and I look forward to them coming. We also live close to a hospital and one of them imitates the sound of an ambulance siren perfectly, they are great imitators and intelligent birds.

Bad Driving Habits of Australia

Same, they are such a beautiful bird and so intelligence. I love their songs in the morning and afternoons. Such a beautiful sound.
