The story behind this performance is very interesting. The boys were in a radio interview (and dressed for radio) when they were asked to fill in for another musician at this lunchtime concert in Aix en Provence in France. There was no time to change so they did this totally off the cuff. It shows what consummate professionals they really are

With two music performance degrees, I strongly agree with you. The pianist is flawless. I’d love to hear his piano solo work where he truly gets to shine. But this young vocalist sets a gold bar standard for sure! And he himself is classically beautiful as well! If they were doing a major concert in an ancient venue with authentic acoustics, it’d be worth booking the tickets and hotel for a trip across the pond to experience them in person. The greatest electronic sound technology in the world just can’t replicate those sounds in those spaces. These young men are rare gems!

@Aiarta no. Female voices are alto, mezzosoprano and soprano. Countertenors are just male altos or mezzos basically, almost never sopranos. There are however natural male sopranos such as Radu Marian, but those voices can only be produced by males that haven't gone through puberty or have had issues developing their larynx. They're called sopranists.

@Pete Martell Countertenors are usually baritone singers (rarely tenor, never bass) who practiced their falsetto until it developed into a real voice. They also sometimes use a modal voice for lower notes. The reason they are so rare is that there's a big stigma of sounding like a woman and it's extremely difficult to learn this.

New homes on the market in Warsaw tend to not be in a "community" at all, but rather in a single apartment building. The new buildings definitely have a gentrification problem though.

For this performance, Jakob have said in an interview that he didn't know that there were cameras, originally it was a radio broadcast without visual support. He was to sing in the middle of summer in the region of Aix-en-Provence in France. That's why he sings in everyday clothes and that the pianist plays piano in flip flops.

@Jo Blo so it seems my other reply in this thread is hidden.. you want to hear what heaven sounds like you should run not walk to Dimash Qudaibergen channel (also spelled Kudaibergen).. start with Ave Maria for the pure heaven sound but he’s literally the best in the world & he does everything from pop classical rap Arabic melismas metal rasp growls whistle notes higher than Mariah Carey, traditional folk music of his country... like a 7 octave range. I tried linking but maybe that’s why my comment was hidden. Guarantee you’ve never seen anything like him.

Probably the nicest countertenor voice I’ve ever heard. Nothing quite like that particular sound. It’s kind of uncanny, all the richness and darkness of a male voice but in this piercing, lyrical range.

Even if you understand nothing about vocal technique it should still be pretty obvious that this is INSANELY difficult. His form is flawless and many vocalists spend their entire lives to get even somewhat close to this level. Damn, very impressive.

@Es Obelisk A trained alto should have no issue singing any of these notes, perhaps the high F maybe considered out of range for a choir alto but certainly not a soloist. He is a trained countertenor and therefore he can sing almost that exact same range than an trained alto could. As for how countertenors can sing this high, the answer is most likely falsetto.

@karlpoppins fuck, i’m an alto, and i’m don’t think i could sing that high, at least not on long notes like this (even if i didn’t have to breathe to sing)
i’m obviously not nearly as practiced or skilled as he is, but i’m just getting more and more impressed with this man.
it kinda looks like he’s somehow narrowing his throat to sing like that? i don’t know that much about vocal technique, but i know that testosterone causes the larynx to harden, which gives you larger resonance, and it seems like he’s somehow working around that WHILE singing this beatifully.
this reply wasn’t meant to be this long, but i just keep discovering more facets of how impressive his performance is.

I've got respect for this guy, I don't think I could ever do it. My voice is too deep and every time I try to sing higher pitch it physically hurts my throat. I listen to guys like this and I'm amazed that they can sustain it.

I heard the original Radio France recording on the radio in my car and just broke down in tears.
