Genesis
BEDROOM - Deftones Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I reject both sides of what I'm being told
I've seen right through, now I watch how wild it gets

I finally achieve
Balance, balance, balance, balance
Approaching a delayed
Rebirth, rebirth, rebirth, rebirth
I'm positive there's no sense to what I'm being sold
Yet here I go, I watch how wild we get

Oh, can you taste your life?
Balanced, balanced, balanced, balanced
How will you spend your time?
Reborn, reborn, reborn, reborn

Climbing out of the ashes
Turning time inside out
We're miles beyond the sound

We'll start again
Taste a lifestyle that never gets old
Yet here we go
Just watch how wild it gets

I finally achieve
Balance, balance, balance, balance
Approaching a delayed
Rebirth, rebirth, rebirth, rebirth

Climbing out of the ashes
We're turning time inside out
We're floating off in the ether
We're miles beyond the sound

We're everywhere
No need to return
I'll show the way

We're everywhere
No need to return
I can show you where
No need to return
I can show you

Climbing out of the ashes
We're turning time inside out
Floating off in the ether
We're miles beyond the sound

Oh, can you taste your life?
Balanced, balanced, balanced

How will you spend your time?
Reborn

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Deftones' song "Genesis" explore themes of self-awareness, breaking free from societal expectations, and embracing personal growth and transformation. The singer of the song rejects the conventional narratives and expectations imposed upon them by society. They have the clarity to see through the illusions and falsehoods surrounding them, choosing instead to observe the chaos that unfolds when one deviates from the norm.

As the song progresses, the singer expresses a sense of achievement in finding balance within themselves. The repetition of the word "balance" emphasizes the importance of harmony and equilibrium in their life. They are on the verge of a rebirth, a process of transformation and renewal that has been delayed but is now within reach. This signals a personal awakening and a new beginning for the singer.

There is a contrast between the singer's skepticism towards societal norms and the desire to experience life to its fullest. Despite recognizing the lack of meaning in what they are being sold, the singer still engages with the wildness and unpredictability of existence. The questions posed about tasting life and how time will be spent reflect a contemplation of one's choices and priorities in life.

The imagery of climbing out of the ashes and turning time inside out signifies a metaphorical journey of overcoming challenges and reshaping one's perception of reality. The mention of floating off in the ether and being miles beyond the sound suggests a transcendent experience of moving beyond limitations and expanding one's consciousness. The repeated assurance that "we're everywhere" and the invitation to follow the singer's lead indicate a sense of empowerment and guidance in navigating this transformative process. Ultimately, the song conveys a message of liberation, self-discovery, and embracing the boundless possibilities that come with personal growth and renewal.

Dude. Deftones is huge. They've been huge since the 90s. They get all the recognition. Whenever deftones drops new music it's a big deal.

@crispychickensandwich3886

He has a point when he says they deserve more recognition. Think about it like this, if White Pony was their last record, don’t you think they would be even more famous? Look at bands like RATM, System of a Down, Tool, Nirvana. All bands that ended, or went on hiatus too soon, but it created lighting in a bottle. A perfect time capsule for people to romanticize and obsess over. Deftones is one of the most consistent bands of that era, so they’ve always been seen as contemporary as opposed to legendary.

Crispy Chicken Sandwich I value your input. I will now consume you for energy.

@macy4735

Not really... I'm 36 been listening to them since their first album and you'd be surprised how unpopular they are. My favorite band since middle school though.

I feel like Deftones - White Pony needs to be the next album of the month. I feel like you still don’t grasp how amazing and huge this band is.

@steppere97

White Pony as album of the month would be dope!

@danielh2387

Dude, for real. I understand how people love the first two albums, but white pony for me is another level. It's like their music evolves and matures just like the fans. There's a lot of bands I grew up listening to, but deftones are probably one of the only bands from my teen years that I still love.

@DuffyLONER64

I honestly think Diamond Eyes is the better album
