Landslide
BEDROOM - Fleetwood Mac Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I took my love, I took it down
Climbed a mountain and I turned around
And I saw my reflection in the snow covered hills
'Til the landslide brought me down

Oh, mirror in the sky, what is love?
Can the child within my heart rise above?
Can I sail through the changin' ocean tides?
Can I handle the seasons of my life?
Mmm

Well, I've been 'fraid of changin'
'Cause I've built my life around you
But time makes you bolder
Even children get older
And I'm gettin' older, too

Well, I've been 'fraid of changin'
'Cause I've built my life around you
But time makes you bolder
Even children get older
And I'm gettin' older, too
I'm gettin' older, too

Ah, take my love, take it down
Oh, climb a mountain and turn around
And if you see my reflection in the snow covered hills
Well, the landslide will bring it down
And if you see my reflection in the snow covered hills

Well, the landslide will bring it down
Oh, the landslide will bring it down

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Landslide" by Fleetwood Mac convey a deep sense of introspection and contemplation. The singer reflects on their life and the challenges they have faced, represented metaphorically by climbing a mountain and seeing their reflection in the snow-covered hills. The opening line, "I took my love, I took it down," suggests that the singer is willingly confronting their emotions and vulnerability. However, the turning point comes when they realize that the landslide brings them down, symbolizing the unexpected difficulties and setbacks that life can bring.

The chorus poses introspective questions about love, personal growth, and the passage of time. The singer wonders if love and personal growth can transcend the challenges that they face. The line "Can I handle the seasons of my life?" speaks to their uncertainty about navigating the ups and downs that come with age and experience.

In the verses, the lyrics express a fear of change and the struggle of letting go. The singer acknowledges that they have built their life around someone, possibly a romantic partner, and have hesitated to embrace change because of that dependency. However, they also acknowledge that time has a way of making people bolder and that even children grow older. This recognition of the inevitability of change and the passing of time forces the singer to confront their fear and accept the reality of their own aging.

Overall, "Landslide" is a poignant and introspective song that explores themes of love, personal growth, and the challenges of navigating life's changes. It speaks to the universal experience of facing fear and acknowledging the passage of time.

I used to sing this at the top of my lungs to my husband Damon. 15 years of marriage and 4 kids later he was killed on his way to work one day 4 days after Christmas. Now I sing it to my children and miss the man we built our life around. Learning to continue on without you is the hardest. Damon, the children are getting older....RIP forever 37
