Sanctuary
BEDROOM - Joji Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴

Go ahead and bark after dark
Fallen star, I'm your one call away
Motel halls, neon walls
When night falls, I-I am your escape

When you lay alone, I ache
Something I wanted to feel
If you've been waitin' for fallin' in love
Babe, you don't have to wait on me
'Cause I've been aimin' for Heaven above
But an angel ain't what I need

Not anyone, you're the one
More than fun, you're the Sanctuary
'Cause what you want is what I want
Sincerity

Souls that dream alone lie awake
I'll give you somethin' so real

If you've been waitin' for fallin' in love
Babe, you don't have to wait on me
'Cause I've been aimin' for Heaven above
But an angel ain't what I need

Pull me oh-so close
'Cause you never know
Just how long our lives will be

If you've been waitin' for fallin' in love
Babe, you don't have to wait on me

'Cause I've been aimin' for Heaven above
But an angel ain't what I need

Overall Meaning

In the song "Sanctuary" by Joji, the lyrics paint a picture of late-night escapism and emotional vulnerability. The opening lines, "Go ahead and bark after dark, Fallen star, I'm your one call away," suggest a sense of comfort and reassurance in a time of darkness. The singer offers themselves as a source of solace and escape, symbolized by the imagery of motel halls and neon walls when night falls.

The next verse expresses a longing for connection and intimacy, as the singer confesses, "When you lay alone, I ache, Something I wanted to feel." This line conveys a deep yearning for emotional closeness and highlights the singer's desire to be a source of comfort and understanding for the listener.

The chorus delves into the complexities of love and relationships, with the singer acknowledging that they have been aiming for a higher ideal, possibly alluding to a sense of perfection or unattainable expectations. The repeated refrain, "But an angel ain't what I need," suggests a desire for something more real and tangible, beyond idealized notions of love.

The final verse touches on the uncertainty of life and the fleeting nature of time, as the singer urges the listener to embrace the present moment. The imagery of pulling close and not knowing the length of our lives adds a sense of urgency and a reminder to cherish the connections we have in the here and now. Overall, "Sanctuary" explores themes of emotional connection, escapism, and the search for sincerity and authenticity in relationships.

@@jacobtheham4147 ye, music video starts off with joji killing the bad guy who stole the purple crystal

flashback 1 year joji is being depressed because his only purpose in life (the bad guy) is defeated

his first mate (guy that kinda looks like spock) notices this when he goes to the room where joji is. They have flashbacks that reveal some of the story of fighting the bad guy with the fake eye, who steals the purple crystal and they have to get it back, etc etc.

At the end the first mate decides that the only way to cheer joji up is to become the new bad guy, he kills a crewmate, steals the purple crystal, rips out his eye and escapes with the crystal.

That Jojiโ€™s depressed look is so damn depressing that you fall in love when he shows a little bit of a smile at the end.
