When asked by NZ Musician what she wanted listeners to take away from the song, Benee said:
"Just a feeling of relating to a situation. I hope that people can kinda feel like they aren’t the only ones going through this kinda stink situation."
"“Soaked” is a very personal song. It’s about a specific time in my life where I felt very vulnerable. I found it hard to actually talk about it to anyone. It’s about that feeling of regret you have looking back on what you should have said but didn’t at a pivotal moment. This makes it stand out for me as I think a lot of people have been in this situation."
- BENEE, for NZ Musician
She explained to Artist 1 On 1:
"I was sitting in the studio one day and Paul (her manager) was like ‘what are we going to do about the art?’ and I scrolled through my photos on my computer and found this baby picture of me and I bought it on to the photo editor where you can saturate the image and stuff and I did that and I sent it through to him and he was like ‘okay cool.’ It was chill, we didn’t think about it too much and I like that kind of thing for lots of my work. Like, just do it."
When asked whether she thought this song would become a hit, she answered:
"No, I did not expect that at all. We released it as my second single. “Tough Guy” was pretty low key, chill. I was planning what I was gonna release, and it was one of those songs that I had that I was like, “Ok, I like this song and I feel like maybe it’s a bore cause it’s like too much of that.” But I definitely did not expect anything from it."

My tongue is sealed within my mouth
These certain words they can't come out
These thoughts are walking on their own
Dancing around with no control
I know what I did to you was wrongHence why I've kept it for this long
Secrets have been brewing up a storm
Did not expect it to transform
Soaked up in my brain
For another day
These things I'm tryna say get drenched and swept away that's the truth
Soaked up in my brain
Don't know what to say
Something about you boy you soak up half my brain, yes you do
Ooh, ooh, something about you boy you soak up half my brain
You look at me like I hit you, ooh
Stole all your things then left you bruised, ooh
Look what I've got myself into, ooh
My words are stuck, my body too, ooh
I know what I did to you was wrong (know what I did to you was wrong)
Hence why I've kept it for this long (so long, so long)
Secrets have been brewing up a storm (a storm)

The lyrics to Benee's song "Soaked" express the difficulty of expressing oneself when consumed by guilty secrets. The first verse establishes the singer's inability to speak out the thoughts that are swirling inside her head, suggesting a deep sense of shame and regret. The second verse explicitly highlights the wrongs done to her lover and the difficulty in reconciling her actions with her feelings. The chorus emphasizes the weight of these emotions on her mind, and how they refuse to fade away, regardless of how hard she tries.
The line "Something about you boy you soak up half my brain" repeats throughout the song, emphasizing the impact of this particular person on the singer's life. The use of the word "soak" suggests that the person plays an absorbing role in the singer's thoughts and emotions. This reflection of the person's impact on the singer's life contrasts with the guilt and regret she expresses in the rest of the song, indicating a complex mix of emotions.
Overall, "Soaked" is a song about guilt, regret, and the inability to express oneself openly. However, it also highlights the power of certain individuals in our lives, and how they can leave a lasting impression on our thoughts and emotions.
