Pray
BIEBER Justin Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh oh oh
Oh oh oh
Oh oh oh
And I pray

I just can't sleep tonight
Knowing that things ain't right
Its in the papers, its on the TV,
Its everywhere that I go
Children are crying
Soldiers are dying
Some people don't have a home

But I know there's sunshine behind that rain
I know there's good times behind that pain
Can you tell me how I can make a change

I close my eyes and I can see a better day
I close my eyes and pray
I close my eyes and I can see a better day
I close my eyes and pray

I lose my appetite,
Knowing kids starve tonight
Am I a sinner,
'Cause half my dinner is still there on my plate
Ooh I got a vision, to make a difference
And its starting today

'Cause I know there's sunshine behind that rain
I know there's good times behind that pain
Heaven tell me how I can make a change

I close my eyes and I can see a better day
I close my eyes and pray
I close my eyes and I can see a better day
I close my eyes and
Pray for the broken-hearted
I pray for the life not started
I pray for all the lungs not breathing
I pray for all the souls in need
I pray
Can you give 'em one today
I just can't sleep tonight
Can someone tell how to make a change?

I close my eyes and I can see a better day
I close my eyes and pray
I close my eyes and I can see a better day
I close my eyes and I pray

I pray
I pray

I pray
I close my eyes and pray

Overall Meaning

In the song "Pray," Justin Bieber expresses his concerns about the many issues that are plaguing society. He opens the song by stating that he cannot sleep tonight, knowing that things are not right. The issues that he is referring to are all around him - in the papers, on TV, everywhere he goes. Children are crying, soldiers are dying, and some people do not have a home. However, he remains hopeful that there is sunshine behind that rain, and that there are good times behind that pain.

Justin Bieber then poses the question of how he can make a change, and how anyone can make a change. He acknowledges that he is not doing enough himself, as he loses his appetite knowing that kids are starving tonight, yet half his dinner is still on his plate. He suggests that he has a vision to make a difference, and he wants to start making that difference today. He then prays for the broken-hearted, for those whose lives have not started, for those who are not breathing, and for those in need of souls. He ends the song by saying that he will pray, and he will continue to pray until he can see a better day.

"Pray"

And I pray

I just can't sleep tonight
Knowing that things ain't right.
It's in the papers, it's on the TV, it's everywhere that I go:
Children are crying,
Soldiers are dying,
Some people don't have a home.

But I know there's sunshine beyond that rain.
I know there's good times beyond that pain.
Hey, can you tell me how I can make a change?

I close my eyes and I can see a better day.
I close my eyes and pray.
I close my eyes and I can see a better day.
I close my eyes and pray.

I lose my appetite
Knowing kids starve tonight.
Am I a sinner
'Cause half my dinner
Is still there on my plate?
Ooh, I got a vision to make a difference.
And it's starting today.

'Cause I know there's sunshine beyond that rain.
I know there's good times beyond that pain.
Heaven, tell me I can make a change.

I close my eyes and I can see a better day.
I close my eyes and pray.
I close my eyes and I can see a better day.
I close my eyes and...

I pray for the broken-hearted.
I pray for the life not started.
I pray for all the lungs not breathing.
I pray for all the souls that need a break.
Can you give 'em one today?

I just can't sleep tonight.
Can someone tell me how to make a change?

I close my eyes and I can see a better day.
I close my eyes and pray.
I close my eyes and I can see a better day.
I close my eyes and I pray.

I pray.
I pray.

I close my eyes and pray

@AntiochMom

My daughter was 6 yrs old. Just bought her her first CD, this song comes on as we're driving down the street. She started crying asking why there are people hurting, hungry with no homes. Since that day we have been involved in so many volunteer programs. Started a group to help with Christmas and so many others things. Literally because she understood the meaning behind this song. She's 17 now and still crys hearing it. So thankful for the life lessons these words have taught. 🙏

We must also thank you for the excellent job as a mother that you did with her.
Without your education she would not have been empathetic to understand the song, you did really well
