Babes In Toyland's debut single on Treehouse Records ("Dust Cake Boy" b/w "Spit To See The Shine") landed them a deal with Minneapolis' famed Twin/Tone Records.
Their debut album Spanking Machine -- released in 1990 -- caught the attention of Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore, who began singing their praises in the music press and invited the band to support them on their European tour. Meanwhile, Spanking Machine was released in the UK by Southern Studios, and was quickly gaining favour with the music press and John Peel who recorded a session with them and named the album as his favorite of 1990.
In the summer of 1991, To Mother was recorded at Southern Studios with John Loder in the producer's seat. The EP entered the independent charts in the top 10 and stayed there for an amazing 13 weeks (ten of which the EP held at the No. 1 position). Early in 1992, Michelle Leon amicably left the band and was replaced by Maureen Herman, an old friend and long-time fan of the band. Their second and most successful album, Fontanelle was released in August 1992 and was followed by the outtakes EP Painkillers in June 1993.
After a number of other tours, Babes in Toyland released Nemesisters, their third and final studio album, in 1995. After this, the band were on-off with Leon's departure leading to the dissolution of their record label contract. In 2001, the band reformed for one final time and performed their final show on November 25 in Minneapolis. After this, the band officially disbanded, however, Kat Bjelland performed a number of shows in Europe under the band's name, only to face legal action from former members if the tour went further ahead.
After much speculation, in 2014, Babes in Toyland had announced they reunited and announced tour dates.
In 2015, Maureen Herman was replaced by Clara Salyer.

Why did you leave me
When I was still inside of you
You search every sky
But all the stars are inside of me
Well I said why did you leave me
When I was still inside of you
Who are you fooling
You're transparent to me
Go inside now
Why did you leave me
Go inside my darling
You're guise has fallen
Fry
Fucking fry
Fucking fry
Fucking fry
Fucking
My blue boyfriend
Why
Why did you leave me
When I was still inside of you
Well I said
Fry
Fucking fry
Fucking
My blue boyfriend
Believe me
I'm still inside of you
Who are you fooling
Well I said
Why did you leave me
When I was still inside of you
Why?
The lyrics in Babes in Toyland's song "Pain in My Heart" express the pain and confusion of being abandoned by someone who was supposed to protect and nurture you. The repetition of the question "Why did you leave me?" suggests that the singer is struggling to understand the reasons behind the abandonment. The line "When I was still inside of you" adds a layer of complexity to the situation, implying that the singer was not only physically but emotionally attached to the person who left them. The metaphor of the stars being inside the singer emphasizes their desperation to be reunited with the person who has abandoned them, but also hints at the idea that the singer will never find what they're looking for outside of themselves.
As the song progresses, the lyrics become increasingly fragmented and desperate. The line "You're transparent to me" suggests that the singer's trust in the person who left them has been shattered and that they can no longer believe anything that the person says or does. The repeated phrase "Fucking fry" serves as a kind of cathartic release of anger and frustration, suggesting that the singer is lashing out at the person who abandoned them in a way that they may not have been able to do before. The final repetition of the lines "Believe me / I'm still inside of you" adds a final layer of ambiguity to the song, suggesting that the singer is still struggling with the emotional aftermath of the abandonment and is unsure of their own place in the situation.
Overall, "Pain in My Heart" is a powerful exploration of the emotions that come with being abandoned or betrayed by someone you thought you could trust. The lyrics are vague enough to allow for multiple interpretations, but also contain enough specific details to suggest that the singer is drawing on personal experiences or feelings.
