Manners
Bad Waitress Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sit up straight good
Sit up straight good

Sitting at the table
Playing with my stack of peas
Waiting for the plastic forks
To melt beneath the cupboard
"Little brother, pass the butter"
"Don't play with your meat"
"You're a little glutton made of mutton"
"Playing with your seeds"

We paint a perfect picture
For the whole wild world to see
A little tropicana
With a perfect summer breeze
Rigmarole my darling
She's a piece of poetry
I want her to be mine
forever mine to be

Let em roll let em bleed
let em run to the sea
Let em burn into the fire
Let it feed the world's desire

I want you to relieve me
of the things i cannot be
You want a little dog
to commit your entropy

Rigmarole my darling
She's a piece of poetry
I want her to be mine
forever mine to be

Let em roll let em bleed
let em run to the sea

Let em burn into the fire
Let it feed the world's desire

Overall Meaning

The opening lyrics, β€œSit up straight good”, set the tone for the rest of the song to be about manners and social etiquette. The next lines describe a family gathering, where the singer is playing with their food, waiting for the plastic forks to melt because they're bored. The lyrics then shift to the other family members who start making comments about each other's eating habits. This builds humorously with the use of puns like "little glutton made of mutton" before transitioning to an entirely new subject.

The middle of the song talks about putting up a façade of what society deems to be "perfect" or "acceptable", when in reality it's not true to ourselves. The lyrics state, "We paint a perfect picture, For the whole wild world to see", before describing an idyllic scene with a "perfect summer breeze". The repetition of "rigmarole my darling, she's a piece of poetry" implies the idea of trying to conform, despite wanting to be your true self.

In the final lines, the song addresses the desire to let go of societal norms and be true to oneself. The lines, "Let em roll let em bleed, let em run to the sea" suggest a willingness to throw away societal pressures, letting them fade and drift away. The repeated phrase, "Let it feed the world's desire", illustrates breaking free from expectations to allow others the opportunity to see that being different is okay, and that there is beauty in individuality.
