The three founding members of the band are Scottish brothers; the Morris brothers (James Morris, Mark Morris and Des Morris). As children in Motherwell, they worked in the entertainment industry as part of a cabaret act. They moved south to England, to Cannock, Staffordshire, where they formed Balaam and the Angel.
1985 saw the band augment their line up with keyboard player ‘Wendy Harper’.
Initially, the band self-released a series of EPs via their own Chapter 22 label and played some tour dates opening for The Cult. This saw Balaam and the Angel catch the attention of Virgin Records who signed them and would release their debut "The Greatest Story Ever Told" in 1986. They toured in support of it in the United States with KISS and label mates Iggy Pop.
A second guitarist, and the first non sibling was added to the band in 1988; Ian McKean. The band began to move away from gothic rock music styles into a sound that had more in common with hard rock. With their new found style they recorded the album "Live Free or Die", which featured the minor rock (#13) and college radio (#18) hit "I Love the Things You Do to Me". This was soon followed up in similar style when they recorded "Days of Madness", before being dropped by Virgin Records. Their song "I'll Show You Something Special" is on the Steve Martin and John Candy movie "Planes, Trains and Automobiles" soundtrack.
At some point, the band were joined by Chris P Notes on Keyboards.

Burn Me Down
Balaam and the Angel Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Would you say that I'm still into you
Eyes so wide, so bright, I fall inside
I thought I was okay but you
Opened up my heart, I'm terrified
When you're calling my name and you're looking my way
Could you just walk away
Could you just walk away
Could you just let it stay
Could you just let it stay
And let me down
In my room, I paint pictures for you
Red and blue, with the roses in bloom
Snapshots of these days I'll burn away
The feeling always fade then you
Show up at my door
What can I say
You're the first one to show and the first one to leave
When you're sending for me, could you just let me be
Cause I know how this ends, and it's stupid of me
But I just want to love, I don't want you to leave and
Let me down
Because the nights get longer and my love grows stronger with time
And if your love is frozen, can I break it open in time
The lyrics to Balaam And The Angel's song Burn Me Down speak to the vulnerability and fear that can arise from falling deeply in love with someone who may not feel the same way. The singer acknowledges that they are "breaking in two" and may be too afraid to confess their love for fear of rejection. However, they cannot deny the intense feeling they have for the person and express their desire for them to stay, even if it may not be right.
The imagery used in the lyrics is powerful, with the singer painting pictures for their loved one in their room, only for the feeling to fade when they leave. The roses in bloom represent the beauty and potential of their love, but also allude to the idea that all things eventually wither and die. Despite the inevitability of this outcome, the singer still desires love and connection with this person.
Overall, the lyrics to Burn Me Down convey a sense of longing and desperation, as well as a fear of the potential pain that may come from pursuing their love.
